TS1436 Why does ITunes completely shut down when I click "Burn Disc"?

Lately every time I try to burn an audio disc from a playlist, ITunes completely shuts down.  I get a pop up saying "the Application iTunes quit unexpectedly

    Are you using a Mac Mini, with Mac OS X 10.4.11?

    Click the "Report" button. Copy and post the crash report in a reply. Don't bother sending it to Apple since it will be discarded.


    Don't post anything beyond the start of the binary images; it's not necessary.

    Thanks. The reason I wanted to follow up is that I had just fixed this exact same problem on a Mini running OS X 10.4.11. Click Burn and it crashed. No known earlier modifications preceded this problem.


    Unfortunately I returned the Mini to its owner just today so I can no longer compare its crash log to yours, but I do recall seeing the entry The iTunes version was also identical 9.2.1.

    The fix was simple:


    • Quit iTunes.


    • Using the Finder's Go menu, select Go, paste the following, then press the Go button:




    • In the Finder window that appears, find any files containing the name iTunes (there were two of them) and drag them to the Desktop, or the Trash.


    Launch iTunes. It will ask you to accept its terms and conditions as if you were launching it for the first time. Minor preferences will need to be recreated but your music library will be untouched.


    Try to burn a disc again.

    It sounds as though you did everything right, and yes, I meant to write "Go to Folder...". That is a disappointment, since the symptoms you describe were exactly identical, and the fix was so simple. I doubt I will come across a similarly afflicted Mini any time soon.


    The only thing I could suggest is to look in the following folder as well




    and drag any iTunes .plist files found there to the Desktop also.


    I am quite certain that all I did was trash the two files in ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ but search for similarly named files in that folder as well.


    In the course of troubleshooting I also downloaded and reinstalled iTunes 9.2.1 from this link:



    ... but it was not until I deleted the two files that the problem was finally fixed. You might try reinstalling iTunes as I did. Doing so will not affect your music collection.


    A final suggestion is to download and install the OS X 10.4.11 Combo update here:



    It may not help but it cannot hurt.


    Edit: By the way have you considered upgrading to Snow Leopard? Your system meets its requirements and it's only $20. Upgrading will greatly extend the useful life of your Mini.

    The reason for suggesting you upgrade to Snow Leopard is that you can run any version of iTunes up to the latest. With Tiger, the latest you can run is iTunes 9.2.2 (and I do not have a source for it).


    This may not fix the problem either, but Snow Leopard should run well on your Mini.
