Have had problems with iMessage for a while now. Used to be network issues, but ever since I upgraded to iOS 6 it's been worse. All other apps needing internet works, so I know it's not a network issue. It will work for a few short hours but it just comes and goes.

this exact same thing happened to me too. More so after doing the most recient upgrade (IOS 6)
I can't re add my friend who has imessage on her iphone (I have the itouch)
we both have it turned on too
I don't remember ever changing the DNS to 126.96.36.199 to get iMessage to work, but I seem to remember I had to hard boot the 3Gs to get it to work after the upgrade to iOS 5. Has worked steadily on iOS 6 with no issues. I do go to SMS when I go out of WiFi or AT&T data coverage.

Try to unsign and sign in again.
For FaceTime and iMessage chosse to use your Apple ID instead of your mobile number.
Go to Settings>>Message>>Send&Receive and check if your Apple ID was set or not. If not, set it properly.
If it is still not working, unsign your Apple ID and select your mobile number ("+" "country code" "mobile number").
Also check in: Settings>>Message if you turned on iMessage before. Here, turn off "Show Subject Field".
Did you turn on iCloud as well?
Hope it will be helpful

I tried all the solutions above , still none of them work on iPad & iPhone 4S , iMessage was working fine for the last year, & yesterday was not working , every time I try to turn it , I get apple I'd on password is incorrect , although I'm sure they are ,
I also noticed that many have the same problem , and no one knows why or how to solve it , would appreciate any feedback .

ok, so i want to post the same problem but explain what hapends.
First of all i am runing ios 6.0.1 on a 3GS. I just upgraded last week fron 5.1.1 (it didn`t work then either)
So, i activate it, it says i`ts ok, my phone company charges me for activation.. so i know it does something, but it won`t work. Tryed rebooting, tryed the dns change, still nothing.
When i compose a new message and type in a contact that also has an iphone and imessage active (a friend that i know for sure beacous ehe told me to use it and been trying ever since) , the name turns blue but when i hit send, says error sending and sends it as an sms.
it is not cool, i would like something that i pay for work.
anyhow, that`s it. please give me some extra solutions.. thank`s in advance.

Hi guys, i had the same problem, my iMessage wasn't working properly, I couldnt be reached by iMessage, but I could send it throught my apple ID, it seemed not to recognize my mobile number. I changed the DNS number into 188.8.131.52 it didnt help, I was restarting my phone several times, but nothing helped. Then I just deactivated my Apple ID in the iMessage settings, and everything works perfectly. I have iPhone 4S.
FaceTime works with my my phone # and my Apple ID, plus icloud account.
