Q: 2012 mbp - slow wake up from sleep after last mbp update

Hi guys,

 

I have a regular mid 2012 macbook pro which now takes ages to wake from sleep after the last mbp update (the grayed out screen with the vertical bars filling up). I tried to reinstall the 10.8.2 combo update but: "Error: OS X Update can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." - great, apple, btw.

After setting the hibernate mode to 0 the problem still exists with no wake up speed increase. Does anyone have an idea what's going on or how to fix this? it's pretty annoying?

    Well to be honest, I am not going to fiddle around with my mac. Since this problem is with many other users and doesn't seem to be a really major problem, I am happy to wait for Apple to release a fix for this problem. I don't mind a bit of waiting before my mac starts up, not that impatient.

    I was worried simply because I thought this was a big issue and that there is some sort of glitch in my machine, but it isn't so. But now that I know that many other people face the same problem, I am somewhat relieved and I'll just go ahead and wait for that update.

    So far there is still no new updates from apple yet?

     

    Not many mac users facing this problem, just few of us here. Or this could be a new feature that we should learn to accept?

     

    I wish there is some documentation regarding this.

    Since after so long there is still no updates from apple regarding this issue, I have decided to go into terminal to resolve it myself.

     

    I have just entered sudo pmset -a autopoweroff 0.

     

    Do I need to change back to 1, if there are any new updates later? Will i mess up anything from now?

    I also noticed this problem a few weeks ago.

    MBP June 2012

    10.8.2

    On battery everything is ok.

    On AC, closing the lid brings MBP to standby. And later brings it to hibernate (I don't know after which time, usually over night). When I open the lid, a greyscale display shows up and the progress bar.

     

    Before (from june to some weeks before today) this was not the case.

     

    It went to hibernate when the battery drained almost to zero. Which is what I expected.

    Now for really no reason it goes to hibernate when on AC where there is infinite energy :-o

    Hi guys.

     

    I also have the annoying grey loading screen with progess bar & I have been reading through all the post over the last few weeks.

     

    I assuming no one as recieved an update yet? I dont think changing the pmset is a good idea. Someone mentioned earlier about waiting for the official update to arrive, thats what i will do i think.

    Personally i would like to avoid having to keep changing the settings after a new update has been installed, what do you guys think?

     

    There was a comment suggesting unchecking the 'put the hard disks to sleep where possible' box. Has anyone tried this & does it work?

    The noise on wake up does sound like the HD starting to be fair.

     

    Hope this gets fixed soon so we can carry on loving our MACs

    Tom I unchecked the "put the hard disks to sleep when possible" option and it did not solve the issue. The sound you are hearing when unplugging the cord is the CD drive checking for a CD not the hard drive spinning up.

     

    I have been on the phone nonstop with Apple support trying to solve this issue and they have no idea that it even exists. Maybe if they checked their boards a little more often they would know about this issue.

    Right ok! Yes now you say what it is, i can hear it.

     

    Thats a bloody good point, it would make our lives alot easier!

    You can try setting "sudo pmset -a autopoweroff 0".

    I have the same issue after the last MBP update 2.0 that I just installed about a week ago and noticed the issue right away. Sometimes I even experienced long wake up time without seeing the gray progress bar, and the system just seem unresponsive for a long time with the spinning wheel.

     

    As far as the use of pmset it really wouldn't be causing any trouble as long as you know what you're doing, and it's understandable why Apple Care would suggest not messing with it as average user wouldn't know what they are doing and making it hard to troubleshoot it something were to go wrong.

     

    With all that said Apple need to fix it!!! I waited a little while before installing the update and I regret my action!

    Annoyed with the problem and unwilling to work around it using pmset I contacted Apple Care just now.

    The support guy had me reset the SMC and NVRAM. I'm going to close my MBP and see if it wakes up normally in a couple of hours! If the problem persists I will need to call again and they will escalate the issue.

     

    I'll keep you guys posted on wether or not this worked, and what Apple's response is going to be!

     

    For those interested:

    SMC reset: Turn off the MBP, attach the power cord, hold the Left Shift, Left CTRL, Left Alt (option), and the power button at the same time for a few seconds. If you do it right, nothing will happen. (the MBP will not turn on, but the SMC will be reset)

     

    NVRAM reset: Turn off the MBP, attach the power cord, press the power button and as soon as the system turns on, press and hold the Left CTRL, Left Alt (option), the R key, and the P key at the same time. If done right, the system will reboot (you will hear the startup chime again). If the system reboots, then the reset is complete. The reset/reboot will keep happening for as long as you keep the keys pressed, but one reset should be enough.

    Jognt they had me do this and it did nothing to resolve the issue. Based on the thread this issue is because of a software update that effected the PM settings and is not hardware related. At this time Apple has no idea what is causing this problem and keeps telling me to take my laptop in to the genuis bar. They will tell you the same thing as well. I have given up on contacting them for support on this problem.

     

    All they need to do is see this thread and then they will understand what is wrong with the PM settings.

    FWIW I too have this issue, exactly after 4 hours while on power adapter my MBP wakes up from sleep and enters full hibernation mode, and thus it takes a while to wake up again from sleep in the morning as it has to reload the contents of RAM.

     

    What's weird is that I started experiencing this issue yesterday, and I haven't installed any updates recently, nor have I changed any energy saving settings.  According to /Library/Receipts/InstallHistory.plist the last updates I installed from Apple were com.apple.pkg.update.cpu.10.8.2.12C3012.delta and com.apple.pkg.ThunderboltFirmwareUpdate 13 days ago.

     

    edit: The only things I installed 3 days ago were com.google.pkg.GoogleVoiceAndVideo and com.google.pkg.Keystone (i suppose that was an auto-update brought in by Chrome).  Just in case it matters.

    Strangely relieved to find i am not the only one suffering the grey screen (but only when connected to the mains).

    I have spent too long a time faffing around with Applecare on the phone and also tried a couple of terminal commands (specifically this one) http://www.ewal.net/2012/09/09/slow-wake-for-macbook-pro-retina/

    but to no avail.

    I find it very annoying as it takes so long to see if such a change has worked?

    Thought I should add my comments to this topic in hope Apple notice something is wrong.

    As previously posted it seems like someone has got the firmware the wrong way round with the machine "timing" out and dumping memory to hard drive when connected to the mains and not doing so when on battery power (which surely is the point).

    Most forums on this topic relate to the Retina Macbook Pro (which appears ot have these issues and some besides) and there is a claimed solution (which I have not tried on my regular MBP) on https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4151186?start=90&tstart=0.

     

    I would be interested to hear of any brave souls (or those clever than me) who try out this solution on their MBP (not Retina).

     

    Would I be right in assuming that an SMC reset http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 will reset such "sudo pmset" commands in any case if I wish to roll back any changes?

     

    Any interest in my comments and advice very gratefully received - pleased I am not alone in this!

    As Palmz43 stated, the SMC/NVRAM reset did not resolve anything. I called Applecare again yesterday and I have atleast convinced them that it's a software issue.

     

    To narrow down the issue they had me boot up my Macbook Pro in safe mode (hold shift after turning on the MBP untill you see a loading bar). This way only the core OS is running so conflicts with 3rd party software should be avoided.

     

    I'm happy to say that the problem still persists, which means that Apple won't be able to blame 3rd party software for this one .

     

    I'll contact Applecare again as soon as I can. My guess is that they will ask me to reinstall OSX and, if that doesnt work, bring my MBP in for further investigation. What is sure though, is that I won't leave them alone untill they fix this, or give me a free 4th gen iPad .

     

    I'll keep you posted!
