It's not something I have done but Larry Jordan, who is a very knowledgeable and respected editing tutor, produced this guide:
Alternatively there are other tutorials here:-

I tested this and you actually had far better results than me. In every attempt, the imovie import crashed FCP.
In addition to Ian's recommendations, I'll note that Tom Wolsky (who answers so many questions on these boards) has written a FCPX instruction book specifically targeted to iMovie and Final Cut Express users.

just to take into consideration:
I would not dare to continue a Project across two completely diff. apps, although Apple Marketing Dept. tells it's 'possible'. Finalize your Projects in iMovie - done.
A diff. cup of tea/coffee/Red Bull is source-material aka Events. But same story here: FCPX has a much more elaborated meta-info system than iM. I would, if a 'clean' import from media/archives isn't optional, import only Events/Clips I need for future FCPX.
plus, you can export the project from within iM as a 'standalone' movie and add some FCPX-marvel to that.
.... I don't trust these promised 'cross platform' options ....
