iTunes 11 not updating play count & Last played

    I've tried turning off crossfade and that didn't fix it. It also won't account for pays on my phone, which isn't on crossfade. This has obviously been an issue for quite awhile, is it really going ignored??

    some of my play counts  are literally gone.


    for example, i listened to the album "Led Zeppelin III" on my Vista PC at least 85 times.


    PLay counts are all at zero... I am not amused.  Its also like that for most of my Led Zeppelin and GNR catalog.  Mosst of those songs were pre-itunes+ purchased with DRM, i wonder if that is the culprit

    Yes, the crime appears to be for daring to ever having loaded anything in to iTunes that was not purchased from the iTunes store. Apart from my earlier posts in this thread, I've now found over 150 albums (some complete, some only 2-3 songs from an album) with their artwork having vanished.


    The song count thing appears to work for the first song you play in any session, then stops counting aagain (with the cross fade on at least). Stop/start the 2nd song and it counts it, let it play right through and it doesn't. I'm so ****** with iTunes over this update. I emailed them direct, of course they tell you they may not reply, and despite challenging them to show some fortitude and respond, they have not over 1 week later. .

    Most of my music wasn't bought from iTunes and now that they did the update and I turned off Crossfade, I only have a problem with a very small amount of songs, nearly all are sound clips which are only seconds long. But that's the thing with us who are having problems with iTunes is that it is affecting us in different ways. It affects you in one way, another in a different way, me in another way etc. And the work-arounds work for some and not others. It's like it's a beta version. I use a desktop OS X system with their latest operating system, if their product can't work correctly on their hardware and they go this long without correcting it -- that doesn't say much for them as company; if I showed that much irresponsibility at work I'd be fired.

    Apple did do 1 update since this problem started.....yet it keeps continuing. Every few days all of a sudden a whole bunch of song titles (~100 each time) loses their play counts. No precise pattern as to why. some songs have done it three times now. It mostly is annoying and I turned off the cross fade a couple of weeks ago now.  Even tho' this is some sort of detail glitch that is a persisting problem it makes one wonder about other aspects. It mostly seems weird that apple would allow such problems to occur to begin with. This is quite annoying and kind of frustrating.

    My experience has been completely different from most of the other responses here, as follows:

    1. I never had cross-fade turned on at any time. (So that's not the culprit.)

    2. The problem I had was play counts being blanked out (but not date last played).

    3. About 100 songs were affected, out of about 3400 in my library.

    4. All songs affected were purchased from iTunes (about 1/4 to 1/3 of my total purchases); none of my tracks ripped from CDs were affected.

    5. All purchased songs were purchased well after DRM was removed; most were purchased in the last year or two, but there is no clear pattern.


    So far, since the version 11 update, my counts are updating normally.

    I've been able to narrow it down a bit, at least for my case:


    - Most of the time, play counts / last played update just fine for anything that's longer than about 10 seconds.

    - Anything less than about 10 seconds never gets its play count /last played updated.

    - Sometimes after playing for awhile, play counts / last played stops getting updated for just about everything. Sometimes it'll start updating again after more time, but restarting iTunes returns things to normal (at least till it happens again).


    This is with crossfading turned off (and set to its minimum duration of 1s for good measure). Tested with iTunes 11.0.1 on both 10.8.2 and 10.6.8, including with a brand new iTunes library on a fresh user account.

    I just noticed my iTunes is not updating playcounts/last-played info on my Win 7 machine. 11.0 wasn't working with crossfade, so I turned it off then. When I updated to it seemed to work the first day and based on the "recently played" it seems to work intermittently (crossfade on).


    Suffice it to say that this problem continues on.


    I do use an "air play" device sometimes in case that has an affect on this issue. Also, my thousands of tracks have been ripped from CDs I own, I've never purchased from the Apple Store. My computer auto-sleeps after a short time--this precludes using wifi sync since iTunes cannot seem to handle power-saving on a PC--maybe this is also affecting play-count and last-played?


    After stopping and then restarting iTunes, the last-played info seems to update fine (thus far).

    iTunes had stopped updating play count, and on this thread, I learned to turn off the fade-in/fade-out/cross function.


    Now it's happening even without the fade-in/fade-out. iTunes updates the first 2-3 songs, then continues to play the remaining song without updating play count. I reinstalled iTunes to no avail. Pardon my French ... what a POS.


    Clearly Steve Jobs is no longer at Apple.


    I'd love to be able to migrate my music to another player and phone,

    Thank you - it fixed the problem. Too bad that Apple has an increasing amount of software issues.

    iTunes 11 has reset only some of my songs to zero. I've never had the cross-fade on, so that's not it. I've noticed that the songs that are reset to zero are only songs I've bought on iTunes. My last played will show a date of when I last played that track, but no play count.

    I think it's got something to do with iCloud. For a while there - since updating to 11 -  I had two songs of everthing I bought from iTunes, a copy in my local library & one in the cloud ready to be downloaded. Kinda forgot how I turned off all that iCloud stuff!

    Anyway, I'm willing to got back in Time Machine and grab an old .itl library before I updated to 11 - if only to get my play counts back - just wondering if I do will 11 reset that old library too?

    Between this and not being able to open more than one window in iTunes has gotten me really frustrated with iTunes 11 & kinda angry I updated.

    I'm extremely angry I updated, as more and more song counts keep reducing to zero, overnight while I sleep, and missing artwork has become an everyday experience. And iTunes doesn't want to know...........

    Last played date isn't being updated for me, and it seems to be related to the track length.  The problem seems to be happening only for tracks that are under 30 seconds long.  How strange.


    Bummer that nobody has a reliable fix for it.

    I just downgraded iTunes 11 to iTunes 10.7 (how to do it here: and using Time Machine, I got all my old play counts back. Of course, I went back to a time before I updated to 11, so I'm going to have to reinstall some newer songs, but a screen capture solved which ones I'm missing.

    I have the same issue. I don't want to turn crossflow off either so it leaves me kind of stuck with it. There are a few things I don't like about this new version to the extent I'd sooner revert back to the version before until Apple get their act together. Anybody any idea how I do that?
