Nice idea...For me the voice memos were useless so no big deal...but for others....

Yep.  Deleting voice memos solved it for me, too.  And, just to be clear: I have tons of Portuguese music with special characters downloaded directly from iTunes.  That was not the problem.  (Still may be the problem for others, but it wasn't the problem for me.)  I deleted the voice memos while in iTunes, then shut down iTunes, and then checked the screensaver: Voila!  Everything worked again.  It may have been special characters within the voice memos, I suppose, but it was not the special characters for "normal" music tracks.  I still have all of them, special characters and all, but everything now works fine.  Thanks to all for the fix.

Another note: You may have more than one area with voice memos.  I found a playlist called "voice memos" and deleted that, and there were separate files in the recently added files section with the same voice memos.  If you delete the latter, it should take care of the files in the playlist and solve the problem.  Deleting the playlist alone may not be sufficient since the files still exist outside of the playlist.

Same problem. In my case ithe offending file was a PDF. Removed it and the screensaver works again.

I figured out the problem! I have tried for days to search for the answer and here is how it worked for me...SIMPLE

    Step 1 - Open Itunes

Step 2 - Go to Advance Tab

Step 3 - Go to "Get Album Artwork"

    Presto .... it works again

By the way, I just realized something else. If you set your display sleep to let's say 5 minutes, your screen saver needs to be set to less time then that. I kept getting a black screen but I changed my setting for the screensaver to 1 minute and display sleep 15 minutes. It worked like a charm!

Deleting voice memos solved it for me too.  Thanks.

Thanks for the tip. Converting all of my voice memos to Apple Lossless, and then deleting the originals worked for me.  The album screensaver works again.

Yep, the Voice Memos were causing the problem for me too. Converted them all to AAC, deleted them from iTunes (and from my iPhone) and now the screensaver is back.

This is the second time those Voice Memos have caused a problem for me, although it was a while back now and I can't actually recall what the first problem was. Same solution though. More trouble than they're worth. And for something you'd think would be very straight-forward. They're just audio, aren't they?

    Anyway, thanks everyone.

I've had this happen a number of times - more specifically each time Apple updates iTunes.

The easiest fix I've found is deleting any new/doubled up voice memos that get pulled across from iPhone/iPod syncs.

And what do ya know voila! iTunes album artwork screensaver works once again!

My wife just synced with iTunes and all of a sudden, we lost our artwork screensaver. I'm certainly not computer guru and was not about to mess with our iTunes files.  Someone had suggested invalid characters or voice memos.  Then I remember that my wife records voice memo which then get synced into iTunes music list.  I just deleted them and now my artwork screensaver is back.  She doesn't need her voice memos on the Mac mini anyway.  I'm happy.

I have no voice memos or anything similar to that in iTunes. I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and iTunes 11.0.1. I can't program so I'm concerned about the longer solution above. Any ideas?

You don't have to be able to program, just be able to methodically identify & correct problem characters in your iTunes Library file. There are a couple of methods outlined in this thread as to how to do so. I think mine is the friendliest, if not the most efficient. Get an editor capable of doing syntax-checking of XML (ActiveState's KomodoEdit is one) & open up your library file. Don't make the changes in it, but use it to identify the problems & correct the meta-data in iTunes itself. If you need to see the changes you've made so far, you'll have to re-open the file in the editor. Depending on the size of your iTunes library this shouldn't be too long or painful a process.

    Good luck,

Thanks for this thread. In my case, I just deleted the Voice Memos and now all is great.

    Superby forum, so useful.

I was having the same problem, and was about to try the Libarary.xml export and validate method when looking at the file I noticed an empty line at the end. I deleted the line, saved, and reimported the file into iTunes and viola, the itunes artwork screensaver was back.
