The difference between Snow Leopard and Lion is probably not the issue. The issue is probably the difference between the graphics capabilities of your old MBP compared to your new MBP.
However, the specs for the latest MBP do state support for 640x480.

I notice same thing... I got an older tv that requires vga input of 640x480 else it won't work... this was no problem on leopard but after upgrade to lion the "worst" resolution is 800x600- the 640x480 is no longer available. I don't use the tv for movies enough to do those command line programs... I do have a projector I can use if needed.
