I brought a 2nd hand iMac from my friend and I am using the FCPX under his name.  I hope to buy it under my MAC account.  How can I do it safely?  I have already had some events and projects in progress and I can't afford to lose any of them?  Can I just move the App to the Trash and then go to App store and make the purchase and install and the project and events will be there automatically after the installation?

Thanks!!

    Yes.

Did the FCP X come with the Mac you bought?

If so you are fully entitled to use it as your own.

If you have borrowed it after buying the Mac, then just trash it.

For good measure you could use this free app.

The Projects and Events will not be affected, though to be doubly sure, don't delete the trsh before you have checked it doesn't contain any Projects or Events.

    Just to clarify:-

If he sold you the Mac along with FCP X and no longer uses FCP X himself, the app is now yours.

However, if he kept a copy to use on another computer, he is still the owner and you should get your own.

    I don't share your position, Ian …

On how many computers can I install Final Cut Pro X?

The Final Cut Pro X license agreement states that you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install and use the Apple Software only on Apple-branded computers that you own or control in accordance with the Mac App Store Product Usage Rules located at http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/ww/ ("Mac Usage Rules"). Except as permitted under the Mac Usage Rules, you may not distribute …

.... imho, although in Advocat Lingo, that is a clear statement not to 'share' accounts.

And FCPX is 'bundled' with an account - not your account = not 'your' app.-

so, for me, Angus is NOT fully entitled ....

    but, who am I …?

You may be correct legally, though  according to natural justice* most people would probably concur he had the moral right to own it.

According to previous legacy versions of FCP there would be no problem as you were free to sell or give away the app, provided you deleted your own copy of it, which I am sure everyone did.

Unfortunately "natural justice" does not necessarily hold any sway in the law courts.

as you know, I'm no virgin when it comes to laws

I just wanted to mention, that legal advice, esp. under a 'apple.com' adress is quite more complicated than your and mine understanding of 'allowed/not allowed' .....

plus, there's a technical hurdle: updating.

when his friend for example changes his pw, Angus is frozen in 'his' version .....
