Dec 30, 2012 9:31 AM in response to OUKOby OUKO,I never found a solution to the issue or figured out the cause, but it rarely happens to me anymore. It hasn't happened in a couple of months probably. I just assumed it was an issue that was resolved with a Mountain Lion OS update.

Feb 26, 2013 8:36 AM in response to OUKOby thacket,Mine does this too. This is my 2nd Retina, the first one it happened at least 3x per day. MBPr #2 is starting to do it almost everyday not to mention the fan comes on all the time and is incredibly loud. I'm really starting to regret upgrading, I never had any problems wiht my old MBP and snow leopard.

Apr 25, 2013 6:33 PM in response to thacketby Glen Grayson,My 15" MBPR is about two months old. Came with MtLion, and stated having the same problem about a month ago. I was in a meeting yesterday, showing everyone various PDFs on my mac, and it seemed that everytime I rotated my computer so that they could see, it would go black, and wake up rather slowly.
The first few times, I had been grabbing it by the upper corner of the screen and rotating it, so they I started rotating it by the base, and it still turned black.
I don't have Chrome installed. It was very frustrating.

Apr 25, 2013 6:43 PM in response to Glen Graysonby Glen Grayson,I just found a tip on another forum. They were talking about how MBPs can go to sleep if you place something with a magnet on the palm rest. I have noticed this with my iPhone and they said that iPad placed on top of the palm rest can also cause that problem.
I was at a jobsite (I am an architect), and using my Booq sleeve underneath my MBP, to keep it clean. As I rotated my MBP, it would shift slightly on the Booq sleeve. The Booq sleeve has a built-in magnet that keeps it closed around the MBP. I guess when I was rotating my MBP, it was passing over the magnet and going to sleep. That would explain why it was totally random.

May 2, 2013 6:10 PM in response to Glen Graysonby leomm,I also have this problem. I have a Macbook pro non retina mid 2012 and I think it started after installing Mountain Lion. I called apple support twice or three times, I don't remember exactly, I already installed all the updates with patches that they released so far, resetted SMC, reinstalled Mountain Lion and nothing. The only good thing is that it doesn't happen so often. Anybody knows if there will be a new update for mountain lion soon?

May 3, 2013 8:44 AM in response to OUKOby payetteforward,Wow- This just happenned to me with my few months old 13 inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. After a small freakout, it turned out to be the magnet thing for me – I had moved my laptop to rest on top of my old laptop, a white 13 inch MacBook, and it went to sleep. No surprise there!
For those of you who are still having issues, Console is a great application to check out exactly what precedes a sleep event on your Mac. Just do a Spotlight search for Console and take a look through the system logs.
Another helpful command to use in Terminal is: pmset -g log . That command will yield a log of all the most recent sleep events and you might be able to track down the culprit. Sounds like for some people it's a driver issue, for others it's a disk permissions issue - someone else asked about what ACL means - it's an access control list - if you want to reset the ACLs, boot into your recovery partition (restart and hold command-R), go into terminal, and type: resetpassword. This will bring up a handy utility that allows you to reset the ACLs - and the password for your user account should you forget it.
Best of luck to everyone and let me know if I can help!

Dec 26, 2013 10:24 AM in response to Glen Graysonby varsity,THIS SOLVED MY ISSUE.
I've been using my late-2013 MBP 13" Retina since shortly after it was available for sale. No problems at all until today, when I was out and about and was resting the computer on top of my Snugg sleeve (some cheapy thing from Amazon). The display kept going black, and I had to hit shift over and over to wake it up, at which point I was prompted for my password.
I read your post, put the sleeve aside, and the computer has putted along just fine. THANKS!

May 31, 2015 2:15 PM in response to Glen Graysonby Ned Block,I have been having this problem too and just read this. On looking at my laptop case I see it has a magnet and I just realized that this happens only when my laptop is resting on the case.

I was typing with my palms resting or bumping on the touchpad when the screen went dark. It happens to me maybe once or twice a day. Today I decided to "track" it down, since it causes a break in concentration and about a 5 second delay. I am going to try disabling the sleep corner on the theory that my palm is causing the touchpad to move the mouse pointer to the sleep corner. Pity, I like sleep corners.
