Last night my macbook was working fine.  I shut it down.  This morning when I started it, it wouldn't open any programs and then my mouse arrow was gone.  So I pressed the power button to turn it off.  Now when I try to power back up all I get is a grey screen, no icons or anything.  What have I done and how do I fix it??

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

See the steps in this Apple note on booting with a gray screen. If you get to the point of using Disk Utility to repair the hard drive, boot into recovery mode by holding the command and r keys down, and you'll be able to use Disk Utility.

It ended up being that my hard drive went on me...again.  Second one in under 6 years of owning my macbook.  A bit frustrating!  Is this a common thing do you know?

Hard drives in notebooks tend to fail in the 3 to 5 year range. When I buy a 2.5" notebook drive, I usually go with Western Digital Scorpio Black drives, which have a 5 year warranty on them.
