but while all the folders come up and the layout is right all the actual files are blank.
what do you mean by "came up blank"? Do you see empty blank frames instead of the thumbnails?
Or are there badges indicating broken references?
sometimes I imported the photorgaphs from my camera directly onto these library stored on my external harddrvie.
And how did you import exactly? I do not understand "directly onto these library". Are they imported referenced or managed into this library?
Hi Léonie thank you for your help. Sorry for being so vague. So when I say they are blank that is exactly what you say empty blank frames with a little badge in the corner which I'm not sure what it indicates but yes I think broken references. When I say that I import from my camera onto the library I mean I have opened one of the libraries which are on my external harddrive and when I import the photographs from my camera I am 'importing into this particular aperture library'. Does this help you with your questions?

Samantha, which of the three badges is it? Or is it a completely different one from this list: Aperture 3 User Manual: Understanding Badge Overlays
The upgrade from version 3.0 to 3.3 is a major upgrade, and the upgrade of the library can be problematic, when the library has issues. Before you do anything else, make sure you have a backup of your Aperture libraries. Then I'd try to repair and to rebuild them., see:
Then check, if the images still are blank.
- If the badge is the upper one in the picture above, you will probably only have to regenerate the thumbnails: select the images in the browser (try it with a few images only first) and use the command "Photos > Generate Thumbnails".
- But if you see one of the lower icons, then Aperture cannot find the original image files.
- Ctrl-click your Aperture library, select show package content from the pop-up menu and check the "Masters" folder in the Finder window that opens. Are there original images inside, when you dive down into the set of nested folders inside?
Post back when you have checked this.
