Have found that if you delete the contact from your phone and iCloud and switch off the iMessage app it give the phone a chance to 'get sorted'! I had to re-add the contact with an email address and phone number, turned iMessage back on again and it seems to be fine now.
See it this helps. It's a pain if you have to do this with all your friends with iPhones to get the system to work.
Another way is to delete the contact, get them to text you with iMessage on and then use the text message to add the contact info including email, etc.
They have both worked for friends and myself.

I am facing the same issue. I have reset iMessage and its working fine now. However the issue was impacting me for 5days. Is there any way to "force" or "refresh" the system to deliver lost messages?
ie several people have said to me - "you never replied" i am wondering if i can get the system to refresh.

Since iOS6 this issue seems to be fixed. Now iMessage seems to register all my emails (.me, .mac, .icloud) and my cell number. It does this on all my devices (iPhoe 5, iPad 3rd gen, and my work iMac and home Macbook pro). My family is also upgraded to iOS6 on thei iphone 4s devices and I no longer have problems with messages listed as delivered bu t not received. Also, the conversations all seem to be mirrored on all my devices completely with a couple of exceptions where some iMessages that were sent between phones failed to show up on the message app on the computers. I realize that if the messages went through as SMS textx messages they won't show in imessage but these are blue and listed as iMessages. This is a bit of a mystery and has only happened once this morning. All the messages came through on my iPhone 5, however so it wasn't a problem.
Overall I think the service seems much more reliable. It feels like they made some sort of major change on the back end to allow multiple emails and phone numbers associated with a single AppleID. I find it very convenient to pick up a conversation on a computer after starting on my phone. I also get notifications on the computer - nice if I left my phone on silent.
Has anyone else seen an improvement since iOS6?

Am having similar trouble! Took phone off of iMessage, and set on SMS, MMS. Get some group messages from some people, but not all. Not receiving pictures anymore. Spent 2 hours on phone with carrier, and they swear it is not on their end. Updated to IO6, Deleted old messages. Nothing works. Help!

Same issue here between 1 iPhones 4S and 1 iPhone 4 both running iOS 6.01, carrier is SFR. The messages are marked as delivered even though they are not received on the other end. My temp solution is to disable iMessage in the settings pane, but this obviously prevents receiving those messages on my wifi iPad and Mac running OSX Mountain Lion. Help!

I just turned iMessage off then back on, and then signed back in and it seems to have solved the problem. There seems to be problems if you have had different appleid's before. Let me know if that helps.

The trouble is that once the imessage fails to be delivered its gone forever. My friend thinks I've ignored four messages this weekend and won't resend them because she thinks I've behaved badly. So our lunch plans for today have gone wrong cos she thought I was ignoring her. Not great Apple.

Similar problem, I find it happens in 2 scenarrios,
- 1) I'm trying to iMessage my friend next door (he has a iPad 3 running iOS 5.0.1, I have a iPad mini running iOS 6.0.2) I'm the only one with the problem
- 2) I'm I am iMessaging my other iPad (other iPad:iPad 1 running iOS 5.1.1) with the iPad mini and both have the problem.
If anybody could tell me any way to fix it I be grateful

I have a similer issue. I texted a lady friend and recived no reply (SMS). A few days later I texted one last time and she replyed via iMessage. It wasn't untill later that day that I found the messages were duplicated on my iMac at home, which I didn't mind that much. When I scrolled to the top of the list I found that she had indeed replyed to my orignial text 3 days before, as an iMessage in response to my orginal SMS txt.. However it never arrived on my iphone.
(I use an iMac, iPhone, iPad, Macbook Air and an iMac at work).
This is perhaps the worse way a msging system can fail. I'm going to have to work out some way to get iMessage out of my life dispite using so many apple products. I need to know that msgs are going to arrive on the device I'm using.
Any advice how I can make my iPhone work like a Phone? I know that I can turn off iMessage on it however I don't think this is going to solve the basic problem.

Same problem as everyone else.
Why even bother providing the iMessage 'service' if all it does is fail to integrate with the systems.
It is SO frustrating having to ask contacts to 'try and send it again'! At the end of the day I have to revert to email, which would be fine, except you expect to be able to reialbly use a service provided like iMessage.
Has anyone been able to get the missing messages delivered, or are they in limbo until the sender is alerted to the issue?

Same here, got in a fight with my girlfriend last night who claimed that i was ignoring her half the time for 2 days now. I was obviously lying because she got an "recieved and read" status so i must be getting them, right?
Have lost almost 50 messages from her i think.
now she is on a 4S with IOS5 (newest jailbraik), i am on 4 with IOS 6.1 and only nioticed this from the update to ios 6.1 i must say. maybe this helps, maybe problem with 6.1 of between 6.1 and 5.xx ?
anyway disabeled imessage. if i need internet messaging i still have WHATSAPP wich always seems to work!
i bought an iphone because i was looking for a reliable phone... *** apple this is not good.

Anyone figured out a solution to this other than turning off iMessaging? I keep finding that I'll open my Macbook when I get home at the end of the day and find messages from friends that never came to my phone. I just had a friend tell me she messaged me but I never got it! She even resent it standing right next to me, but nothing... what the crap Apple?!? I've restarted my phone and iMessaging but nothings working. Guess I just have to turn it off completely. Ugh annoyed.
