I get a kernel panic anytime I reboot my Mac Mini. I have a feeling it has to do with the SMB shares I'm mounting on my desktop. I use my Mac Mini as an HTPC, and connect to SMB shares on my main PC (Windows 7).

Any ideas? I already ran a memory test.

Does it panic if you don't have an SMB share mounted? Can you post the contents of your log file from Console.app at about when you restart?

Do you have any external devices connected?

First unplug those devices and see if you still get the panic. If so, then the problem is a hardware failure in the Mini. If not, then try one one of the Logitech or hard drive. Whichever one fails is the cause.

This topic seems to have have gone silent over the last while.

I'm currnelty running into a similar issue. Kernal panic upon mounting successfully authenticating to an smb share. This seems to be specific to my 10.8.2 machine currently.

If i supply an incorrect password, i just get the window shake, as soon as the correct password is provided - panic.

the last loaded kext always seems to be com.apple.filesystems.smbfs.

Both machine have nothing connected to them. The one is a fresh install of 10.8.2. and it shows similar symptoms.

true. i'm trying to connect to a smb share hosted on 10.8.2 machine. so it's get's even weirder. all machine are on 10.8.2. as soon as i connect from a client (also 10.8.2) machine to the smb share - panic. i don't even have windows in the mix. i agree with you that there is certianly something very wrong somewhere with the 10.8.2 SMB.

i've sent a number of kernel panics to apple. so perhaps in 10.8.3/4 we might see something change.

    Why might that be?

There is little that can be learned from a kernel panic. There is nothing that can be learned from a second-hand reference to an unseen kernel panic.

I just tried it and it worked fine. Those of you looking for bugs in 10.8.2 would do well to refocus your search on possible misconfiguration issues.

these were created by simply connecting to a SMB share hosted on a 10.8.2 server.

as there are more client machines showing similar syptoms, i suspect that there are two issues here. One, the client SMB services do not fail gracefully when an error state is encountered. (SMB should not kill the kernel - it should be in userland, not kernel space). and secondly, perhaps there is something weird with the server which triggers this state.

I've started a rebuild of the server to see if this helps.

@ etresoftThanks for the significant insight and value that you've been able to add to the conversation.

There is no guarantee that SMB has anything to do with the problem. Kernel extensions are usually pretty reliable because they are so hard to get working at all. There is no separation in the kernel. Any extension could corrupt memory anywhere in the kernel. All file systems are in kernel space on all operating systems. Even those based on FUSE need a kernel-level driver. If you really like kernel panics, then I encourage you to try some of those userland file system drivers based on MacFUSE.

What other software do you have installed on these machines. At this point, it would normally be a hardware issue but you say the problem is found on multiple machines. It could be some 3rd party software that loads a kernel extension, corrupts the kernel, and then unloads itself.

I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.

To back up what Etresoft has said, I have supported Macs professionally for over 20 years, and 9 out of 10 times (at least), kernel panics are related to hardware issues. I've seen it most often with USB connections; second place goes to bad RAM. On one or two occasions an OS reinstall actually resolved it.

    All that being said...

Since I didn't see it mentioned in this thread, and have struggled mightily with this myself, I feel honor-bound to point out that Apple performed a major overhaul of its SMB services between 10.6 and 10.7. Because of a change in public Samba's licensing, Apple dumped it in favor of its own home-grown SMB technology. This could explain the problems described in this thread.

In my own case, I had Windows clients with read/write problems to a 10.8 server. By disabling the Apple SMB and installing open source Samba 3, I have eliminated those problems. Now I'm dealing with smaller things such as lack of intergration with directory services...

Since this is a complex process, I won't outline it here. But if anyone's interested, let me know...
