Seasons Greetings , with the iPhone 5 we seem to all have the same problems , bad signal , no service , phone heating up , these two issues are faults with the new 5 , Apple you should have not released the 5 , now you are making us question the product. I have already sold my shares in Apple as this is just not acceptable, we pay for and want a quality apple phone that works and you are failing us supporters of apple phones.

I don't know if this helps anyone but I have pinned this issue down on my phone to hotmail. When push is on, in advanced settings it gets hot then the battery drops very quickly , when it's manual all is fine. I reported this to apple who have offered me to get the phone replaced  as I've done all the restore etc. However due to Christmas etc I haven't been able to get to the store which gave me some time to try other things which will only confuse matters but here goes.

If i delete my hotmail account and enter my partners instead also hotmail ALL  is fine if I put my account on her exact same Iphone 5 model the issue transfers to her phone it gets hot etc. So in my case it can only be some weird thing with my hotmail account I have been careful to replicate the settings in every instance as I was hopping to prove my phone faulty but it definitely seems to be a issue with my account on any of the two phones causes the same fault.

I've had this phone since September with no issues and my issues didn't to start after any updates but started out of the blue.

I hope this helps it may just highlight similar issues with you guys.

I bought my iphone almost a week ago and I am facing this exact problem. Extreme heat and quick charge drops. I lose aobut 10% battery for each hour without use.

The battery is so hot I can feel it from the Incipio Dual Pro case. I hope the thing does not explode while I am sleeping

I've been suffering the overheating and rapid battery drain ever since I bought my iPhone 5 a couple of months ago. I think you are right, it does seem to be related to the push functionality in Mail. Not sure if its hotmail specific, but if you turn push off, all cools down, processor calms down (that's what's generating the heat) and low and behold, the battery returns to normal levels of drain. I'm 99% certain it's related to push mails on the iPhone 5 - in other words a bug in iOS 6 that needs fixing. Come on apple, sort it out!

I have had my iPhone 5 for just over a week now and began to notice that the battery life is used extremely quickly. To fix the problem just do a settings reset. It worked for me And a couple of other people I know. As the phone getting hot, it's completely normal. If it worries you just get a case and you won't notice, it doesn't melt the phone or anything. Another solution to the problem is to Keep away from using large applications all the time.

    Hope this helps.

A update for you re the hotmail found to be causing the phone to getting hot and the battery draining fast.

With the help of Apple we found it was specifically down to the contacts part of the hotmail settings only with my account so must be a setting with hotmail on their end as my partners account had no issue on my phone.

When you switch off the contacts tab in the hotmail settings you loose your contacts but all is fine with the phone switch it back on you get contacts back but the phone soon heats up and battery drops like a stone .

I had only set up my contacts with hotmail in the first place as I understood that's what was required, so anyway i transferred all my contacts to icloud contacts and switched of the contacts tab in the hotmail settings and all is now perfect.

So my contacts are linked and are backed up in itunes and icloud and my hotmail e-mail/ calendar/ notes all work with hotmail. And the phone is cool and the battery lasts day and half easy.

I never persuade this with microsoft as it's easier to contact the dead than get through to them.

Again I hope this helps you out.

Very helpful indeed thankyou. I guess another solution would be to simply switch push off for the hotmail account and leave push on for other mail accounts

    What an odd bug!

your welcome, Yes that would be a solution but if your contacts are hotmail bound then you need that on and in my case that's the fault. It didn't matter how you set it up i.e exchange etc if you had contacts on with the hotmail account.

In fairness to Apple my problem didn't occur after any update and worked ok for 6 weeks from new perfectly fine then overnight the problem happened, so I am inclined to believe especially as I wrote before that I was able to replicate the fault exactly on my partners phone ,same model , that it is hotmail related.

    regards

Hot Hot Hot.  Was streaming TuneIn Radio via 3G for a few hours, phone got ridiculously hot.  To the point where it was too hot to touch.  Then it wouldnt charge and the phone died.   Singtel Singapore replaced the phone (after some pushing) and got a shiny new phone yesterday.  Tried streaming TuneIn Radio again and similar thing happened.  Phone got silly hot, so stopped it and reset.

I cant blame TuneIn Radio App, its go to be a manufacturing issue as so many people reporting it, and myself witnessing two phones present same symptoms.  The issue has to be with Mobile Data (3G/LTE) as havent seen it with WIFI.

Of course Apple are unlikely to admit the issue but the girlfriends Galaxy III doesnt feel like a hot potato when using internet, maybe thats the way forward?

My iPhone 5 also runs very hot when using Apple Maps. I was experimenting with (comparing) Apple Maps with Google Maps on ~50 mile trip to and from home to see which one I liked best and discovered that my phone got quite hot when I used Apple Maps but did not get hot when I used Google Maps. I don't know why this happens but I suspect, although I didn't notice a battery difference, that battery drain is worse with Apple Maps.
