I have gone into settings, users, login items and deleted/unselected everything and several applications still open upon sign in. iCal, Firefox, Chrome, email and my printer software all open every time I turn my Mac on. Any ideas?

Well a couple of things, first re-read your owners manual about putting your computer to sleep vs. shuttting down.
To solve your problem there are several easy solutions, first quit all apps prior to shutting down and next when you shut down there is a box that asks, see the photo below.
It's part of Lion's (10.7.x) Resume feature. Any apps that are open when you shutdown/restart will re-open when you restart unless you deselect the tick box in this image:
Thank you! That helped. I was not quitting the apps properly which caused them to resume when I logged back in.
