No. The SIM doesn't have to have active service tied to it. It just has to be present. On locked phones, it must be from the correct carrier. This would actually be a good test to make sure you really have an unlocked phone before you leave the U.S. Be careful, The only legitimate source for unlocked iPhones in the U.S. is Apple. They sell both locked (no contract) and unlocked phones. Make sure you specify that you need an unlocked phone.
Keep in mind that the warranty will only be valid in the U.S. You can not get it fixed if it needs service outside the U.S.
