it's not mentioned in the spcs
it says the macbook pro retina is not supported so think apple are going the remote app on ios way as they use wifi rather hten IR
I think the same as you but, how the remote app works on IOS? I think its better use an Apple Remote than my iPhone for this things. Anyway I hope Apple will think in this customers that use iMac as a multimedia player.

The Late 2012 iMacs do not have an IR receiver, so the Apple remote will not work. The remote app for iOS communicates via wi-fi, so if both devices are on the same network the iOS app should still work.
