Can't you just switch over to IMAP to avoid this situation entirely? POP3 is really not designed for access by multiple devices whereas IMAP is.
Very few modern email providers don't support IMAP these days with so many people needing to access mail from multiple devices/computers. Often, switching over is as simple as changing the mail server address.

Not too sure about IMAP and what it does. Will look into it and see if it will allow what I want.
Will it allow all mail to download to the 3 machines or will it only download the one copy to one machine. I have some reading to do. Thanks for your time

I wish very few providers were supporting. Yahoo and everything cable (Comcast/roadrunner/time Warner) still pop.
That is millions. And instead of creating gmail or hotmail account, that also can be set up as exchange, they flock from one ISP to other in the process of that loosing priceless emails and whole accounts. Getting back to original question, there is nothing that I know, that would make email server to read Mac and ipad as same device. Nor does that would matter, since it still suppose to download and keep for a week(that you set up as keep on the server).

with the PC on and the ipad on, both get the email.
If i then switch on the Imac the mail then downloads to it as well.
If the PC and the imac are on they both get the mail. I then switch on the ipad and the mail won't download to the ipad.
It as if when the Imac is on it is causing the Ipad to stop recieving the mail.
I have checked the settings on the Imac and the " delete mail on the server" is not ticked.

Thanks for that.
I have set on my imac:-
Enable this account (ticked)
Include when automatically checking for new mail(ticked)
Remove copy from server after receiving message(unticked) This should leave the copy on the server to allow the othe computers to download.
Will try with unticking "enable this account" :- not sure what this actually does but will try
The screen shot shows this unticked.
Thanks again, will have a play this evening

You are wrong, it should be remove copy from the server ticked, but then set it for 7 days, it needs to be removed, But 7 days will allow enough time to sync to all devices, unless one of them is off for longer then a week. In that case you can go higher then 7 days.

It is to do with the Virgin server. All the computer settings were correct. I have had to add a prefix to my server user name on all 3 machines and it all works now.
I have tried 4 times now just to write the email address above but it keeps adding the little envelope picture in the email address. It should be just the email address with the prefix "recent:"
Not sure if the link below will work
Thanks to everyone
PS the ipad does not have a "colon" on the keyboard in the settings set up. You have to write the email address in "messages" with the colon, copy and paste it in to the Mail settings to get the colon in the user name box!!!iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)
