Just tried it and iTunes won't let you add a .docx nor a .doc file and I'm not share how you would share Word files via iCloud since Word doesn't play nice with the 'Cloud.
I wouldn't bet that the translation would be perfect from Word to Pages unless the layout is fairly basic.
Maybe someone else has had a go and knows the secret, if there is one.
While I was writing my reply to you, Peter had already replied. Maybe I am missing something (iTunes? iCloud?) but here is my simple reply. If I have missed your point, please ignore.
I have recently bought a Macbook. So far, my Microsoft Windows documents have transferred successfully to my Mac (on a USB memory stick). Even before I bought Mac apps like Pages and Numbers, I could view my Windows files such as MS Word and MS Excel in Preview on my Mac (just double click the file to open in Preview). Now with Pages and Numbers I can edit and save those files. I can (through the Share menu in Pages and Numbers) save those files in formats that my Windows friends can read. For word processor files, I prefer to export as RTF (any word processor, Windows or Mac, can read RTF files). PDF is a another option; anyone with Acrobat Reader can read PDFs.
Your Word files will not automatically convert to Pages on your Mac, but if you have Pages, you can open them and save as Pages documents (and save as back to Word).
The Mac is very versatile!
P.S. Following Peter's comment, I should add that RTF may not convert fancy layouts.
If you have a document on Microsoft word and you send it to your iPad will it automatically convert into pages and look the same way as it did on Microsoft?
Normally you can just email a word doc to yourself and open it on your iPad via Pages or another app. Whether it will look exactly the same depends on the content. There are apps other than Pages which are especially designed for best compatiblity with MS Office stuff.
Thank you both so much, I'm so bad with technology so thanks for the help!! I just have to do a school project and I have already started it on my hp computer but I just got the iPad and was wondering if I could continue it on pages, But I guess that's a no but I'll try it anyways, even though I think my layout on word is complicated.
