Another test is to connect the Mac and the printer's network interfaces with a cable.
If the Mac can discover and install the multifunction (printer and scanner) without trouble the problem is elsewhere.

Back from a long business trip! (CES)
I used an old switch to try:
Printer --- Ethernet --- Switch --- Ethernet --- Computer
It didn't helped.
Any other idea? :-|

I have exactly the same problem (same error message with a Lexmark X203n connected through the network that is detectec by Bonjour and that used to work).
After manually configuring with the HP Jetdirect driver, I can print again, but it would be nice to have a solution thath allowed me to use the scanner. Did you manage to solve that?

I never found a solution to use the scanner from my Mac. Soon after buying the X203n I asked Lexmark support and they told me it wasn't possible. So I'm using scan to email. :-/ I wouldn't have bought it if I had new.
