I am equally disappointed with lack of support for iPhone3G. Mine is less than 2 years old, and I cannot upgrade to latest iOS? Does this mean I have to switch phone every year?
I hope Apple will start supporting 3G with a new patch release.iOS 4

Of course not, just keep using your iPhone with the latest update available for it. A new update does not make it any worse. Do you have to buy a new car with every new model that comes out?
I hope Apple will start supporting 3G with a new patch release.
They most likely won't.HP DV7 Laptop, Windows 7, iPhone 3G 8GB 4.2.1
I would hope that at the very least they will patch the security holes recently identified in iOS 4.2.1 for the 3G aswell. Even if it's just a 4.2.2 patch to keep the phone secure and includes no features, except Safari patching of the security.
Though of course, there is no reason that the 3G could be given the same scripting engine to speed up Safari. I highly doubt that there are any hardware requirements for that software to use.iPhone 3G, iOS 4, Jailbroken.
I understand that 3G iPhone becomes "legacy" but if you consider that telecom operators bundle their iPhone offers with a 2 year contract, you end your engagement period with a phone that works really worse than at the start!
I used to really enjoy the device for a little more than 1 year then iOS 4 arrived and since then just hope that each new version will not decrease performances any further.
Even though I perfrectly understand that the 3G phone does not have enough power to operate iOS 4.3, it would now be very appreaciated to get from now on a simpler/lighter iOS version for 3G and just including the upgrades for security and basic usages, such as phone calls, iPod music...

I am also suffering with my 3G. I have been through 5 replacement phones. The latest issue over and above the fact that I cant upgrade to IOS 4.3 , is that my phone drops calls left right and centre. My emails do not get downloaded anymore, and I have "no Service" more than I have any signal.
During Backups, the phone starts syncing, and when it has to download something now, a warning comes up saying that the Iphone could not be found....even though on the phone screen it still says Syncing.
I have had to restore the phone so many times....every time I loose my text messages and various other info.
I started out to be a happy Iphone user, but currently I feel like throwing it in the closest lake.
This is not what we know from Apple.Iphone 3G, iOS 4
Apple was wrong in not allowing the IOS update iPhone 3G to version 4.3 and later, thus exposing the "vulnerabilities have already been disclosed and to come" to a large number of users worldwide of this model, launched in 2008 and sold until 2010. This decision leads us to think whether to actually buy the iPhone 4 (as long asthere is stock) with the risk of being left out of the life cycle of the device or migrate to another smartphone with Android operating system as widespread and with a great future. Competitors (HTC, Samsung, Motorola, etc.) are holding a "big advantage" of Apple's error in leaving unsatisfied and vulnerable to all users of the iPhone 3G.
I agree and wrote them. All I received was this automated canned response. So bad of apple..ugh!
Thanks for your message.
In order to connect to WhatsApp, or activate your number, you will need the latest version of WhatsApp Messenger - v2.8.7 - available from the App Store on your iPhone. Please note that iPod and iPad are not supported devices.
The latest version of WhatsApp for iPhone requires iOS 4.3 or later. Regretfully, Apple does not allow new app updates to be compatible with both iOS 6 and older versions of iOS, effectively ending support for the iPhone 3G. Because of Apple's decision to stop supporting these devices, we can no longer provide new app updates for iPhone 3G users.
If you have an iPhone 3GS or newer device, please update to the latest version of iOS. Instructions for updating can be found at this Apple Support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
WhatsApp is also supported on Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and select Nokia devices. Find out more at http://www.whatsapp.com/"
No help whatsoever, so until I either buy a new iPhone 4 or 5 or switch to an Android looks like I am just stuck. Sad. Bad Apples ruin the whole bunch. I think I am moving back to Android and the heck with this nonsense. After all the years of loyalty, heh!
How is it Apples fault that the people at Whatsapp decided to use iOS features that require ios 4.3 or greater? I'll answer for you: it is not Apples fault, it is the fault, if fault there is, of the people behind Whatsapp. They could have choosen to build their app so that it is compatible with iOS 4.2.1 and still run on the iPhone 3G. It is them, not Apple, who have abandoned you.
It is Apples fault. They 'phased out' the older iPhone so their customers would be forced into buying a newer model. Very shady and unethical. You're right though, Apple hasn't abandoned anybody, they're pushing everybody to their competition...
Nonsense. Coming up with new models so that they can make new sales is how any electronics company stays in business, so there's absolutely nothing unethical about it. The original iPhone got more major upgrades to the OS than just about any other smartphone, so anyone who complains that eventually they got cut off is just being unrealistic.
Nor was there anything that forced any developer to drop support for older versions of iOS; that's completely the developer's choice. Though software companies also want to sell to new customers and so have to come up with new features which often requires newer versions of an OS.
If you believe that Apple is pushing people to the competition when having practices that are in many cases more flexible and generous than the competition, you just haven't been doing valid research.
Anyway, you are perfectly free to buy whatever device you think suit you better. I doubt anyone here will care whether you buy an iPhone, an Android phone, a Windows phone, or just use smoke signals.
