Is there something weird about certain Sony cameras and iPhoto 9.2.3 on Snow Leopard?  (These are the latest software versions for my MacBook Pro 1,1.)

When I connected a Sony DSC-W570 Cybershot-type camera to a MacBook Pro via the USB port, if iPhoto is open, the following happens:

  1. iPhoto adds the camera to the Devices window
  2. then it adds an "untitled folder" and opens a window, as if it's starting to collect thumbnails
  3. the "spinning beach ball of death" appears and I have to Force Quit iPhoto.

As far as the Finder is concerned, it sees the camera, and going through folders I can transfer JPEGs manually to the hard drive.

The Sony has two menu items I've experimented with:

USB Connect can be set to "Mass Storage" or "PTP/MTP".  In the later mode, the Mac Finder doesn't recognize the camera, but it still makes iPhoto crash.

LUN Setting can be "Multi" or "Single".  This means whether the internal memory and the memory card are available via USB, or just one or the other.  Doesn't seem to make any difference.

Sony does offer its own picture-downloading application "Picture Motion Browser", but I don't want to use that, and can't believe that iPhoto wouldn't work with a major piece of hardware like this.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 2 GB SDRAM

Can you access the camera with Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) ?

One possible cause for this is directory damage on the camera's card.
