Since this posting I have learned that email providers apparently can distinguish between mobile devices and computers. My local ISP recently had a major email failure for over a day. After the problem was fixed, everything was back to normal for computers, but mobile devices were still not receiving all emails. When calling the ISP about not receiving all emails on my wife's Kindle and my iPod Touch I was told that they were still having issues with mobile devices. After three weeks the problem was fixed.
This experience helped me understand why my friend had different results for his iPad than what he was having for his laptop. I don't know if this is correct or not, but I had read a discussion that Midco did not allow sending mail through their smtp server outside of their service area. That's why my friend was not able to send email out from this area. Based on this recent experience with the local ISP's mail system, I suspect that the reason why his iPad worked is that Midco's email system handles mobile devices differently. Whether this is intended to be like this, or not, I don't know.
Anyway, my friend recently spent several months back up north in the Midco service area and has returned back to the south and Suddenlink's service area, and has not complained of any email service interruptions.

Thanks for the reply. My problem seems somewhat similar, except it is my desk top that is acting up and the mobile devices are working. Seems to be one or the other.
Midco is a cable company so I do wonder if it is a matter of "if they can" over "they don't allow" service outside their area... But in my case they swear up and down that it is not them and I have to contact apple. So I am going to bring my desktop in to my local shop and I have to pay someone for what I increasingly believe is a Midco problem and the solution should come with the service.
Thanks again it was informative.

Just wanted to say thanks for pointing me in the right direction again. Got my computer back from my local apple shop and it was Midco. They don't update something on their end as much as they should and it makes things go out of wack for verifing and trusting passwords and such. So we got it figured out.
