This worked in so far as it moved my iPhoto pictures to the larger drive. However, it did not remove the pictures from the smaller drive. In disk utility, I can see that the pictures are still also on the smaller drive, but the pointer is now to the larger drive. How do I delete the pictures from the smaller drive and free up disk space?

I moved all the old photos to the trash, and emptied it multiple times. I've restarted the computer multiple times. When I select storage under "about this mac", it indicates the pictures are still on the drive and the available space on the drive is unchanged.

and report what and where and look closely - especially at
you do not want to see actual data, just small alias for each drive volume you mounted.
