How much RAM do you have installed?
And how much free/empty hard drive space do you have?
Although 2 GB RAM is officially the minimum required, it is an absolute minimum - 4 GB RAM is far more realistic.

I have 4GB and 456 free space. could it be a conflict with the upgrade?

Ok, check in Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities) to see which applications seem to be RAM or CPU hogging. Also check on the bottom of the window (under the System Memory Tab) to see how much you're using and your page-ins and page-outs.

You upgraded to 10.7.5 from what OS version and when you say 456 free space, 456 whats… 456MB or 456GB?

Thanks, I explored your suggestions and learned more about my computer:) but my level of experience at the tec stuff is novice to say the least. It does seem to be working better so maybe the problem worked it self out???

Well, keep an eye on Activity Monitor processes; it also helps to reset Safari at the end of the day to get rid of things not needed. Restarting or shut down/boot up occasionally also helps clear out things.

I had the same problem as Habbit 33, post from Mikrohard in this tread solved my problem.
I had 11g63b and got lockups/freeze when hammering disks, (copy large files)
Discs locked up for a few seconds to 10-15. i could not firgure out why. The memory usage was ok, cpu was ok, disk IO went down to 10-20kb, then after the "freeze" up to the 40-50MBsec i normally have, then 20-30 sec full speed down to 10kb again.. Up and down all the time.
Changed the "sleep" setting and it now copy 10-20GB files with steady 50MB/sec again.
What caused this, if it is "interop" between the firmware on "orignal" sata disks/controller/intel bios in my mini server mid 2010, if it is that i use raid0, or for whatever i dont know.
What i do know is that it worked like a charm on pre 10.7.5 and not on 10.7.5, and i havent changed anything else than the OS "patches" from Apple.
