From my experience, when performing an AT&T unlock, if you don't setup your iPhone as a new device, you won't get the "unlocked" message in iTunes. Your iPhone it most likely unlocked, but you can't tell until you put in a SIM card from another carrier. For me it was easy as I had a Co-worker that had a Verizon LTE device, so he pulled the micro-SIM from his phone and put it into my iPhone, which quickly saw it and accepted it. so I could tell my iPhone was unlocked.
If you perform a full backup and then do a restore as a new device, you just might get the unlocked message in iTunes, then you could restore from the backup you just made, if you really want to see that message. I seem to recall that someone else didn't get the unlocked message when they performed the process like you & I did, but when they upgraded their iOS, they then got the message during the upgrade process.

Call AT&T and tell them you aren't sure the unlock worked because you didn't get the iTunes confirmation. They can tell you if it is really unlocked. I did that, and a day later got a text from AT&T:
"AT&T Free Msg. Our system shows you have successfully unlocked your iPhone. For further questions, please visit att.com/learningcenter."

so, did you stay with AT&T I assume since you received a text from them? I'm with T-Mobile so not sure if I'd get the message, but I will definitely call- Thanks!

I did exactly what you wrote. I never got any kind of unlock message on itunes or the phone. I don't have the microSIM with me. I will have to check with someone tomorrow at work to see if it's really unlocked. But there really isn't anything I can check on the phone to verify if it's unlocked, right?

I unlocked my phone as soon as it was eligible. I did stay with ATT, but kept that phone until recently. I plan to sell it soon. I hadn't realized that your phone was no longer active on ATT. No, there isn't any way to tell with the phone itself.
