That's what I thought, also, but I found numerous exact duplicates.  Go figure.

FYI - the problem I had was that iCloud retained contacts from an earlier sync and would not back-up the changed contacts in my iphone.

My PC is running XP and Outlook 2003 (I think) and that may be part of the problem.

Anyway no matter what I did to the iPhone contacts - including deleting them all - once the phone reconnected to iCloud, the original contacts were returned to the phone.  I solved the problem by going to www.icloud.com, logging in to my account then opening my iCloud contacts.  In contacts on the web there is a settings wheel at the bottom of the page where I selected "all contacts" and deleted them all.

Next I turned off contacts in iCloud on my phone - when you do that you will be asked if you want to delete all contacts from the phone - I deleted all contacts from my phone then synced my iPhone with my Outlook contacts by switching on that feature while connectedby USB to the PC and in iTunes - iPhone - info - sync with Outlook.

That now updated my phone contacts with the cleaned up version from my PC.

Last I turned on contacts in iCloud on my phone and the contacts from my phone now match what is in the cloud and everything seems to be in order.  When I change a contact in my phone it changes in the cloud too.

What does not happen is a change in Outlook on the PC and as far as I can tell that has to do with the age of my OS/Outlook.

You need Outlook 2007 or 2010 and "iCloud Control Panel for Windows" to sync Outlook with iCloud.
