Q: AppleTV and HDCP error

I must say that I am very disappointed in how Apple is handling this. The company released a software update a while ago that included the HDCP or High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection to block the copying of audio and video content as it travels through the net. Due to this update, some of us AppleTV owners may have been experiencing errors while renting, buying or home sharing content through the device. The error is as follows: "This content requires HDCP for playback. HDCP isn't supported by your HDMI connection." Thinking to resolve the problem, I went and bought so far 4 different sets of HDMI cables to include an Apple branded HDMI cable and it did not work. Well, I thought it was going to be the TV since my TV's HDMI ports could not be updated, I went and bought a brand new TV which I did make sure that the ports were HDCP compatible and to my surprise it did not worked either. I reset the device to reinstall the software and nothing happened. This past weekend, I went to the Apple Store and they said, well lets erase and reinstall everything and it should work. The guy comes back and plugged it to a Sony TV where they have their demo AppleTV and it gave him the same error again. He said lets try it one more time and when he cam back the device would not even connect to the HDMI port. I am standing there asking for a replacement, which is fare enough due to the circumstances, and let me remind you that the circumstance is that my AppleTV as well as many others got damaged due to the software update not just normal usage and even though it was out of warranty by 80 days it was not my fault that the software update damaged it. Apple all they said was you either pay for the replacement or buy a new one. I was so angry that all I wanted to do was to throw the darn thing in the trash can in front of people in the mall so they know what's going on. I have always been a firm believer of apple but some times I question their way of doing business with the customers. Now I have a damaged AppleTV at home that I cant use not because of my own fault but because of a malfunction on the update and they make it seem as my fault. So if you are having this same problem, you can try anything, you can go to the Apple store and all I have to say is good luck. Thanks Apple....

    I have tried all the options above with no sucess. It happenned after the last software update. It had happenned before and suddenly it worked again. Now nothing works, I can not watch even previously purchased videos.

    I had this error message with both iTunes contend and video from my iPhone 4S. I also could not get 1080p as an option in the TV Resolution menu. A new Dynex DX-AV008 DVI cable from Best Buy solved my problem.

    Sept,19 2012, I have HDCP error after swapping HDMI cables. Newest cable is braided wire made by Phillips company purchase 8 months ago at Riteaid Pharmacy store. It caused HDCP error trying to play Netflix. SOLVED by swapping HDMI cable end for end. I removed the HDMI cable from Apple TV and reinserted twice, without any success. But, by removing entire cable from the Apple TV and from the TV and swapping the cable ends putting the end from the TV into the Apple TV then putting the end that was in the Apple TV into the TV, this SOLVE my HDCP error.     I am having the same issues however it only seems to be when I stream via AirPlay from an iOS device running iOS6 and playing from the new independant Podcasts app.

     

    The only 2 variables in my situation are that I changed out my HDMI cable with a newer one and I updated to iOS6. I have since replaced my original older HDMI cable but alas I still got the HDCP error while steaming from the iOS6 Podcasts app. Music will play for a minute and then just stop. When I turn on the TV, I see the HDCP error on screen that everyone is getting.

     

    I do not have any issues streaming music from iTunes 10.7 on my MacbookPro (with intgrated Podcasts).

    I haven't had any issues (yet) with movies or Netflix from my ATV2.

    I don't have this issue when streaming from iOS6 iTunes or any other music or audio app (aside from Podcasts app).

     

    I've since reconnnected my old Airport Express and set it up for AirTunes. Music streaming from all apps works great now. Gotta love older tech.

    Thanks csjoecho, I have changed the cable for a High-Speed HDMI cable and solved the problem.

    I'm guessing this is a fluke...  HDMI cables do not function differently from one end to the other.  You've probably caused the same temporary "solution" that many of us have had plugging and unplugging our cables.  Give it a while, and I'm betting the problem will come back.

     

    I DO wonder about apple's intentions on this one.  I'm using an APPLE BRAND HDMI CABLE, and I'm STILL getting this problem.  If the true solution is to get a "High-Speed" cable, why hasn't apple been selling the correct cable with their products?!  Now, I've spend $60 on another cable, more than $1000 on a new TV, and I STILL have an appletv that's nothing more than an overpriced brick!  Come on, apple. 

     

    Stop screwing your shareholders!

     

    (and apple is intentionally being typed in lowercase to show the same disrespect for them that they are showing for us by ignoring our pleas for help and not supporting this)

     

    So sad, but Steve was the end of an era - I guess this just proves that they are finally on the decline

    I've had an Apple TV for around 3 years and been happy with it.  Two months ago I purchased the latest version and until last night it worked fine.  Last evening my wife and I decided to rent a movie, but on start up I got a message about a software update.  I decided to do the update immediately rather than later.  What a mistake that was.  We proceeded to rent a movie, but were unable to play it, getting that HDCP error.  Even worse, we could not play movies we had previously purchased via ITunes gettting the same message.

     

    I probably spent an hour and a half unplugging, restarting etc etc but to no avail.  So a brand new Apple TV which was working perfectly is now useless.  It is nothing to do with the cable.  It was as a direct result of the software update.

     

    After 90 minutes of pure frustration and increasing rage towards Apple, I dug up the orignal Apple TV and everything worked fine.  I have only used Apple products for the last 10 years but when a company whose products you have loved induces rage and frustration, then it is time to move on.  There is no point making beautiful boxes if the sofware on them isn't fit for purpose.

    I too have joined the community of users who are now having problems with Apple TV and the famous HDCP error.  Tried different cables, connecting directly to the TV, etc. but to no avail.  Seems to definitely be related to a handshake error with new TV's and a compatibility issue with the latest Apple TV update.  I've had this ATV2 for 3 years and the only common element is I have a new TV.  All other equipment works fine with the new TV. 

     

    Apple please fix as I am a loyal user -- iPads, iPhones, iMac's, MacBooks, and MacBook Pros are all in my household.

    We also get the HDCP error after doing the latest update. Apple please create another update so all out TV's work again.

    We had a perfectly fine system working until you made us do this update. We should not have to go buy a new TV now. We have one of those big honking 200lbs TOSHIBA 46" TV's. I don't want to move it. Furthermore, if you are going to distribute an update, it should be manditore to let use users know that this new update might disable our older equipment. Some people don't move at the speed of light like you whipper snappers. Please put it back to the way it was.

    I downloaded a lot of movies off icloud onto my Mac and iPad to AirPlay on vacation.  The cabin we stay in doesn't hav Internet but we brought a router and an appletvs to stream movies, well looks like we can't stream the movies we bought from our iPad because of this hdcp error o. A brand new projector hdmi cables and applet .

     

    If I purchas a movie I expect to be able to watch it.  I bought movies off icloud because of the convenience of watching at home and on vacation but if you go to a small quaint poor mans cabin your screwed

    Im having the same HDCP play back issue, except it seems to be intermittent. some times netflix works some times not. how do i know what it is. i don"t have a clue where to start. Never been so disapointed with apple.

    What bugs me most is that its so hard to get a hold of apple for any sort issue one person said the called apple 6 months ago and still haven't called them back. looks like they don't support anything they make, just let their customers hash it out on some BS community support! what the **** is that all about!

    Of course, Apple would want you to make an appointment with one of their Genius's and make you drive to an Apple store. And while you are at their retail store, maybe you will buy something from them as well. LOL

    I have been getting the same error since the last update. I have found that if I go to Gerneral - Restart. This cures it every time. A pain but at least a temp cure until an update is available. Hope this helps others.
