Just turned On cellular data and make sure 3G is on, both Facetime and iMessage were activated
Just turn on 3G
I tried everything in this thread except for resetting as new phone. Nothing worked. I was about to reset phone but tried this first. I turned off cellular data then turned it back on. "waiting for activation" was gone and my cellular phone number was checked and ready for imessage.

After trying many of the solutions posted in the forum, it came out that my device was not set to send SMS. As customer of Vodafone Germany, you can test if your telefone's SMS services are activated by typing *132# and then the CALL button.
You will receive a message on the screen telling "This mobile phone is ACTIVATED or NOT ACTIVATED for the usage of SMS-and-MMS services"
To activate the SMS swervices, type *133# and then the CALL button. That was my only problem. After activating the SMS service on the device (an iPhone5) then the activation of iMessage and Facetime took just few seconds.

Ive had my iphone4s for just over a 2 weeks and my imessages are still going through my email. I found of another website it said cause i was on a unlimited prepaid the international text hadn't gorn through yet so it hadnt been activated. I got a credit and now a message saying "your carrier might charge for sms message used to activate". When i click ok optus send me a message saying that 'a message im trying to send or recieve has failed as im out of credit for that type of message...etc'. In setting it just says waiting for activation but i can still send imessages through my email and normal messages through my number.
Please help im not sure what to do, as i want imessages going through my number.

are you using a regularl sim card which was cut to fit the iphone 5 or did you get a new micro sim card from vodafone?

I got new sim for the iPhone 5. I've tried everything mentioned in forums and Youtube videos. Still it says waiting for activation for few hours and says activation failed after a while. I'm on roaming, do you think this might be the issue?

did you get that plain white micro sim card from vodafone India without any logo or vodafone written on it?

I think its a problem with the vodafone india network I am facing the same problem here in mumbai.

You are right. I am in Bangalore and a friend of mine and I were facing the same issue with iMessage activation on Friday (11/1). Called up Vodafone on 111 and told them that I am unable to activate iMessage. Also tweeted to @VodafoneIN informing them about the issue. Spoke to Apple Customer Support and they confirmed that it is an issue with Vodafone's network, and not Apple.
Today (14/1), the activation went through. Before you activate iMessage, make sure to turn off iMessage *and* Facetime, and sign out of both services if you have used your Apple ID to sign in.
