Q: filevault failed: boot file not written

Just installed Mtn Lion over a clean install of Lion (following a recently corrupted drive) and I cannot enable filevault. I keep getting the message shown below.

I've tried booting from the recovery partition and repairing both the disk and permissions. Still have the same issue - any ideas?

Thanks

Dan.

I would guess not, reformat appears to be the only fix...

    Best of luck

I have solved this with the help of:

        https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4204255?start=15&tstart=0

in my case the offending kernel extensions were:

    NovatelWireless3G.kext

    NovatelWirelessFilter.kext

    NovatelWirelessUSBCDCECMControl.kext

    NovatelWirelessUSBCDCECMData.kext

    USBExpressCardCantWake_Huawei.kext

    Vodafone.kext

    VodafoneFilter.kext

    All works now :-)

Perhaps Apple should have a little chat to the Developers breaking the operating system...

I've never used Launch2net, ah well, guess I'll never know :0)

Although I have used Launch2net, it was not installed on the new MBP.

I believe that the problem is actually the mobile device drivers. I moved about 6 or so kernel extensions out, enabled filevault and then moved them back after. (rebooting in between each)

I also had the same problem, but thank you net_jedi for your assistance.

I was able to get FileVault to work by removing these extensions:

    HuaweiDataCardDriver.kext

    NMHuaweiPhonesVTPCDC_106.kext

    NMSamsungDriver_106.kext

    NovatelWireless3G.kext

    NovatelWirelessFilter.kext

    NovatelWirelessUSBCDCECMControl.kext

    NovatelWirelessUSBCDCECMData.kext

    Vodafone.kext

    VodafoneFilter.kext

I'm not sure which one(s) of the above fixed the problem.  To get it to work I moved all of these to a folder I created on the desktop, deleted them from System/Library/Extensions, restarted (including zapping the PRAM for good measure) and it came good.  I am running 10.8.2.

    Cheers!

PS.  This is a clean install of ML that I only did a few weeks ago.  I've never installed Launch2net.  So the common thread I'm seeing here is with the mobile extensions (Huawei, Novatel, Vodafone etc).

FYI - had this on a Yosemite system. Had a serious migration assistant fail and ended up doing what became a complicated manual migration. In the process somehow the "EfiLoginUI" folder and " Firmware.scap" items in /usr/standalone/i386 went missing. Copying them and ensuring ownership & perms were correct (root:wheel, RW/R/R) the error went away. Thankfully "Console" logged the error so I knew where to look.
