Is there a way to show the day and the date with iCal in week view? It seems quite a huge omission!

There's no omission... The day and date is right there in the top row of each column in week view:

In my calendar, even on days with all day events it shows the day and date at the top. In fact, I cannot find any way of replicating the view you're getting without the day and date...

I can only think that perhaps your window display preferences have got corrupted.

With iCal closed, try backing up, then deleting the "com.apple.iCal.plist" file from ~/Library/Preferences/ then re-open iCal and see if the window display is reset.

    Nathan,

Quit Calendar, open System Preferences...>Language & Text>Region>Region: and set/re-set the appropriate "Region."

    Nathan,

I am using OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2) what version of OS X are you using?

This is what my "Language & Text" preference pane looks like:

It appears you are using Mac OS X Lion. Try Language & Text>Formats>Region:
