Why are you asking this, what are you trying to do?
You can make the background transparent for objects, but not the base layer of a slide.
The background can be set to none, but that is not transparent.
Inspector > slide > appearance

Keynote is a very useful tool for making simple geometric figures and for making simple manipulations to figures and images. These can then be saved as pdf files that can be included into text documents for reports and papers.
For this it would be extremely useful if the background of the slide were transparent.

Yes I use Keynote as my drawing application, very quick and easy.
A transparent background uses a mask called an alph chanel, Keynote can import these but cant create or export them.
