After rebooting this new iMac finder opens minimized or not the way I had it set up when it shut down.  Don't have this problem with other iMac or Macbook pro.

There must be a setting I'm missing somewhere in plain sight.

Finder? That app controls your Desktop. Are you saying that it's minimized? Very strange that. Provide the salient details of what you're seeing where and provide a screenshot of this behavior.

That's not Finder, but one the Applications folder window. Every Finder window I leave open reopens as I left it, so I suspect a hosed .DS_Store file. Each folder you open gains one of those. To solve your issue, close that window, launch the Terminal app in /Utilities/, copy & paste this command into the window that pops up, and hit the return key:

    sudo rm /Applications/.DS_Store

At the Password: prompt, carefully type in your admin password, since nothing shows up on the screen, and hit the return key. When the $ prompt returns, reopen the Applications folder, set the resulting window as desired, and restart. That should do the trick.
