cbs20  . I have the same setting; the default settings with the window dragging works fine but nothing else

Well what are you trying to achieve with this tiling? I never have a need for more than 4 windows open which is what is given in the default settings, so these settings satisfy my needs so I have never needed to make a change to them.

cbs20: Better Touch Tool app you suggested has so many setting which I do not even understand what they mean so I am confused, but I could anyway make some settings for the Keyboard  (such as Resize Window to Top Right Quarter); is there a guide so I could understand all those settings. They are quite a lot....How do you tile 2 word docs vertically ? (not horisontally which is the only option in word)

Is there an app or setting for mouse on default buttin ? (automatically the mouse should move to default button)

Yeah there is a lot going on with the app. I'm unsure about any type of guide because I've never looked in to finding one. I don't believe resizing to have two docs vertically is an option. I will look into the program a little closer when I get home. I recommend just mess around with it a bit to get the hang of the program. If you are a keyboard shortcut kind of guy then you can make shortcuts to resize the windows using the keyboard. I have this on my rMBP and use trackpad gestures for resizing.

No app can tile two word documents vertically.

I have tested both Moom and Better Touch Tools.
As said, Better Touch Tools has a high learning threshold. I still do not understand most of it

    BetterSnapTool.

Though I agree with Barney that such tools end up wasting more time than saving it, IMO.

Go back to the beginning of the thread...

I also note that the sales spiel for Divvy says

Managing windows can be frustrating, requiring precision control of your mouse or trackpad for clicking, dragging, pushing and pulling your windows to the size and position you desire. Even with all this work, it’s very difficult to get windows exactly where you want them,

    Er...no, it isn't.

I'd suggest anyone who agrees with that really just needs to learn how to use their mac. Sorry. I've never had any difficulty in resizing and placing windows. In fact, I'd say its one of the first things anyone learns to do within about 2 minutes of firing up a mac for the first time.

    Still, each to their own...

Of course windows can be arranged manually, but if it's done often, I for one would rather do it in one click rather than 6-8 drags. Computers exist to make things easier.

At least Apple lets you drag any edge of the window now like Windows always has. For all those years when the Mac only let you drag the bottom right corner, manually moving and sizing windows was a much bigger pain in the rear than it is now.

The Mac solution on the problem with many windows that clutter the screen is with virtual desktops

This is not a good idea at all. It may be quite confusing with several virtula dsktops. but on the IPHONE it is more usefull than on the stationary Mac.

The solution should be a window management system allowing different panes on the screen,  and not virtual destops.

Yes, that is the problem. Increasingly Apple is concentrating on "one application per screen," iOS-style, and not multiple windows arranged for productivity. I do use Spaces where they make sense, but Spaces is of zero help when wanting to compare or transfer data in a side-by-side situation.

One of the neatest approaches to tiling windows that I've seen is the utility "Moom", which basically enhances the green "Zoom" button in OS X:

It is a paid utility, but I've found its quite worth it in many situations.

What about DoublePane ? you can have a Word doc in each pane, vertically and not horizontally (the only option in Word)

Moom cannot do that, I think.
