While moving HD icon I placed it on top of or near the xcode icon on desktop. now xcode won't run. All hardware tested fine at apple and we reinstalled operating system. also HD icon removed from desk. Activity monitor %150 from xcode. Xcode removed and reinstalled twice. Girl at Genius bar stumped too.

I had this happen when I accidently told Xcode too open the directory that contains all my projects.  If Xcode works from a new/different user ID then try deleting everything that starts:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dt.* under the user experiencing the problem.

Thanks xnav, I'm not able to open xcode to start a new file or project, if I'm understanding that's where to enter the new user ID? The best I get is a no editor when I open xcode if the black spinning icon ever stops. And if I try to click anything in the tool bar I only get the color spinning icon.

Open Terminal app and copy paste this:

    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dt.*

    Press 'return'.

    Restart the mac. Test Xcode.

Tried  rm ~/Library/Preferences/apple.com.dt.*  then restart 3 times with no change in xcode.

Less than 3 weeks until the new semester and starting to get concerned.

Create a new Mac user ID using SystemPreferenes>Users&Groups, logon to the new ID and try Xcode.

That works! Do I need to transfer all my files to this new id and is it easy or does this tell you how to repair the old one?

The original ID can be repaired, but it's probably easier to transfer you projects. It's easy to switch back and forth between IDs.

Try removing everything from login items in the affected account, then rebooting the mac.

    Go to

     > System Preferences > Users & Groups | Login items

Make a note of what's in the list, then highlight them all and hit the - minus button under the list.

Restart the mac and test Xcode.

If that solves the problem, you can add things back to the list one at a time, restarting after each one and testing Xcode again till you isolate the troublemaker (or you can just leave the list empty; keeps your start up times fast and clean).

This may be useless unless one also unchecks the 'Reopen windows when logging back in' box in the Shutdown dialog pane.

Yes, if the problem app is still running on the desktop; otherwise, that doesn't affect what gets run at login, it only restarts desktop apps (not background process) that are still running when you shutdown.

Closing all apps before shutdown avoids any interference from the Resume feature.

Right, when Xcode is exhibiting this problem it is running at shutdown unless it has been forced.

Thanks for the help gang. Removed login items (one) but no change.

Run this little free analytics tool

    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Post the output here. It'll give us some clues as to what's being loaded at login on the problem account.
