I have an early 2011 15" MacBook Pro running OSX 10.8.2 and 2.3ghz intel core i7 that suddenly started seizing up abut a week ago. These are the sypmtoms:

1) The battery icon says "service battery".

2) The key backlight function works or does not work randomly and is "frozen" off.

3) Occasional odd smattering of unreadable video displays.

4) Machine seizes up at start up with a frozen gray screen.

5) Machine seizes up and can only be shut down with the power button.

I tried resetting the SMC shift-control-option /on but i dont know if i did it correctly.

I also completed disk utilities with Disk with verify and repair.

any suggestions?

MacBook Pro 15, Mac OS X (10.7.2), 1TB external drive
