I bought a used iphone 4 or 4s not sure which one, and its still linked to an account and sprint cannot activate it to my account until it is taken off the previous one. Any ideas how to clear it completely? Its for sprint and I have sprint as well.

Try to get your money back. It sounds like the original owner breached their contract and never paid the ETF.

You can clear your iPhone completely by doing Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings

That will erase everything on the iPhone except the iOS and Apple-supplied apps.

Then if you cannot activate it after doing that, you should contact Sprint.

Sprint will not activate service on it if the contract wasn't satisfied.

I hate to say this rwerner, but it sounds like you've been ripped off.

    Thanks, KiltedTim, I learned something.

It sounds like rwerner has another (albeit expensive) option -- pay the previous owner's early termination fee to make Sprint happy.  But admittedly it might be cheaper to simply purchase a different iPhone and start over.
