When I am creating a new text message, I type in the contact and I can't touch the "Message Body" box.  The phone makes me press return to get into the "Message Body".  I can't simple touch the screen to change position of the cursor.  Is anyone else having this problem?  Anyone know of a fix?

What you're thinking is the "message body" may be the area where previous parts of the thread are sent.

The message is actually typed in the oval area at the bottom.

Placing your finger in the oval should work.

It sounds to me like your iPhone may have a hardware defect, because when I touch the oval area (on my iPhone 5), that does allow me to start typing the message.  I've had all the earlier model iPhones (4S, 4, etc.) and it's always worked for me.

I suggest showing the symptom to an authorized Apple Repair Center and letting them determine the next step.

Remove the Message app from Multitasking bar and try again.

Remove the Message app from Multitasking bar, reboot iPhone and try again.

Remove the Message app from Multitasking bar, Reset* iPhone and try again.

*Press and hold Power and Home button until Apple logo appears. Release and wait to reboot.

Go to Settings>Messages and make sure that Show Subject Field is set to "Off".

Also make sure the recipient has an Apple device with iMessage configured.
