What you're thinking is the "message body" may be the area where previous parts of the thread are sent.
The message is actually typed in the oval area at the bottom.
Placing your finger in the oval should work.
The oval area is what I meant. I was not sure what to call it. I am actually trying to help my mother in law with her phone. After I type in a contact in a new message I cannot simply touch the oval. When I do touch the oval nothing happens. You have to press "return" from the keyboard to move the cursor into the oval. This is different from my phone because I simply touch the oval and I can type the message.

It sounds to me like your iPhone may have a hardware defect, because when I touch the oval area (on my iPhone 5), that does allow me to start typing the message. I've had all the earlier model iPhones (4S, 4, etc.) and it's always worked for me.
I suggest showing the symptom to an authorized Apple Repair Center and letting them determine the next step.
