Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Well you clearly didn't pickup on my mocking of you entirely. The "grammer" comment was playing off your intellect. The computer land comment was to simplify the term for you.

LG isn't godsend to the IT world, they are a major supplier. When someone with any A/V knowledge goes to buy a TV they don't go buy LG. ESPECIALLY a plasma. Samsung leads the way there. Even Panasonic. That's your own fault. Go buy an "Emerson" and ***** about them too. (Ironically my mom has a Samsung plasma with all sorts of motherboard issues they can't seem to fix).

Getting off topic. I have absolutely no problem with my LG - 4 weeks in. Can't even make the IR happen. I've tried.

    G'day Mate

lol sure mate nice excuse i dont buy it ... but it wasnt half bad .... anyway you look at it learn to spell and use correct grammar before you mock some one else... computer land wow thats a good one though i had to laugh at that .

Now i know why you are getting your pants in a knot over the whole LG is garbage fiasco its because you actually have one i apologise ... Good to hear your is going well the failure rate is unacceptable on LG's behalf compaired to the hand full of samsungs issues.

Keep your fingers crossed though afterall its still an LG no matter how you look at it people are seeing IR after months not weeks so all the best !

If anyone wants one of my THREE bad LG's, it appears you can get them now on the apple refurbished site.

    http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/05/apple-refurbished-macbook-pro-with-retina-dis play/

I'm really curious to see if these are all the LG returns, or is they actually replace screens and sell them out again.

Just returned my rmbp.  It had a samsung display, but it had a dark mura and yellow gradient in the bottom-left.

Try as I might, I couldn't stop seeing it in my normal usage.  I may try again, or 8 may just wait for Haswell--I have my 2010 MBP to tide me over, and while it is slower, the UI (Finder scrolling, Spaces, etc.) is more fluid than the rmbp was.

But man, that screen saved me a lot of eye strain...

People are way over worried about this. I wil tell you that I probably do have some IR BUT I don't see it yet. What am I trying to say? That the checkerboard test is way over the top. It is testing IR to the extreme. Of course you are going to see IR in that test with an LG display. I can probably guarantee that almost EVERY LG display will show IR through that test. I am under the understanding that some displays are worse them others BUT to cut to the chase, so far, I have NOT had IR with EVERYDAY use. I would probably have it when doing that test BUT not with everyday use. I would recoomend to anyone with a rMBP with an LG display that DOESN'T have BAD IR with the Checkerboard test to just be happy with what you have. Count yourseft lucky that you don't have the display that is affected in everyday use.

My LG display was perfect for almost 4 months, I did the burn in tests and it past them all, until I noticed it randomly a couple weeks ago. I let it go for a bit, but it just got worse. Took in into the apple store today, they didn't even do their test and barely waited until it started to become visible when I was demonstrating the problem to say they'll replace the display for me. No hassle at all, which was nice. Said they couldn't guarantee a Samsung, so hopefully I luck out. So I guess despite some bad customer service and Apple seemingly ignoring the problem, they definitely took care of me.

I posted earlier in the thread about the fact that I have a LG display in my rMBP. It was perfectly fine for about 5 months, then I started to have the IR. I've been waiting to see if ML 10.8.3 fixes it before I take it in to the Geniuses, probably a long shot, but what the heck, but was just thinking today....  I have two desktops one has black wallpaper with Apple logo to mask the IR, the other is gray. Was thinking, and may be missing something here, but how come when it stays on the black Apple wallpaper a long period of time, then I scroll over to the gray wallpaper desktop, I see no image retention. This leads me to think maybe it's a software deal?

Graspin at straws here, really don't want to take my macbook in to the play the display lottery, love my display otherwise, don't want to take a chance to get a display with yellow screen or dead pixles.

I totally agree with you Cedquist. I brought mine in for a battery issue and it was fixed immediately just by them resetting the SMC. Atr first, they said that if the battery is in fact defective, I can either have them order be a new one, or get the battery replaced. I was just going to have the battery replaced because like you said Cedquist, I don't want to play the display lottery either. Luckily in the end, they just figured out it was the SMC. So all is good now.

On 1/4/13, I bought a Week 50 (LG) from the Apple Store.  Noticed slight IR before I even read this thread, then I found a green stuck pixel, so I brought it in today for an exchange.

Was given a Week 48 (LG), decided to exchange it again, to which the manager said this is it - "if you don't like it, you will have to return it for a refund because I cannot let you keep exchanging".

The third one also happened to be Week 48 (LG).  Again, same IR issue as before.  This time, found 2 white stuck pixels.

I'm tempted to keep the machine at this point.  Read about 200 pages of this thread but didn't come across a concensus:

How easy will it be to have Apple replace/fix the IR on this rMBP once the 14 day is up?

I know that all the recent screen swaps have been Samsung, but is this something that I will have to fight for?  I was burned on the NVIDIA recall on my 2008 MBP (they said my serial # doesn't qualify), so I don't want to go through that horrendous experience again.

Are all LG rMBP destined to fail, a matter of time?

If it allready as IR there is good chance it doesn't get better over time. I have read from 1 people in this thread about IR getting better after couple of month. Up to you take the risk.

But for me, I would say don't accept to buy a defective product from the start. Especialy at that price tag. You can't ignore this thread of so many people complaning about this problem...

I want to buy this computer so badly, I only have the new iMac and need a mac laptop to carry around with me. This is the perfect laptop for me, thin, light, retina display, fast, and has SSD. But I am not so sure about taking this risk. So should I get a custom bulit non-retina 15 inch MacBook Pro with a 1680X1050 display and a 256GB SSD or just get the $2199 15 inch Retina display MacBook Pro?

I would really like the retina pro but please let me know what you guys all think.
