Fact is that I re-installed again, but...
After the second system update, the re-start process stops during the opening session (after the blue bar is filled up) and screen goes dark with the following statements:

I do not know which login is required. Is it my apple login and password?
If I try the apple login, am unable to find the @ on my keyboard (even when using the qwerty set up).
Then system requests a password:
Unable to reboot from installation DVD as not able to get the driver drawer to open.
Tried different options with the keyboard short cuts to run disk checks (fsck) etc. but to no avail
How to force opening up correctly?

Got through the process of re-installing everything and all ok now
