I have a classic ipod and when I tried to sync it the ipod started making clicking/whirling noises and I could actually feel it vibrate in my hand.  It won't stop unless the battery dies for it won't shut down. Any ideas?

I tried syncing my ipod classic when all of a sudden it started making clicking/whirling noises and I could feel it vibrate in my hand.  It won't shut down until I let the battery die.  I have it connected to my computer trying to play around with it and it shows a sad faced ipod with an exclamation point in a small triangle.  Any suggestions or ideas as to what is wrong.  I have had this for less than six years and never had an issue until now.

iPod classic, Windows XP
