Q: Can I connect the same Mac via ethernet cable AND wireless at the same time?

With my new Generation 5 Airport Extreme I am wondering if I can connect the same Mac via ethernet cable AND wireless at the same time?-- I wish to do this so that via the wireless I can be sure that my iPad automatically syncs each morning at 7:00 am (via Power Manager to wake my Mac and run the sync) –AND– also to have the wired ethernet cable attached so that I can access my Airport Extreme via Airport Utility. (If the cable is NOT connected then I just see a notification that the Apple Extreme is NOT connected).

My setup is:

  • My Internet Service Provider (ISP) modem has an ethernet cable running from it to the WAN port of my Apple Extreme.
  • I then have an ethernet cable going from a LAN port of the Apple Extreme to my MacBook Pro 13" (May 2010) running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
  • I also have another ethernet cable going from another LAN port on the Apple Extreme to my eMac (Feb 2005 – no WiFi) running Mac OS 10.5.11 Leopard.
  • I am trying to connect my 1997 vintage Apple LaserWriter 12/640PS to the third ethernet LAN port via cable (with an Appletalk adapter) - let's see if I can get that to be recognized, may have to fire-up my G4-733 running OS 9.2.2 to get the printer settings working…
  • I also have a powered Belkin 7-port USB hub connected to the USB port on the Apple Extreme.  I wish to connect both a *LaCie 300 mb drive to that as well as my Canon MP640 printer/scanner. (I have already connected the Canon printer without the hub and it works great on my little home-office network –– hopefully the hub with the added hard drive will not cause a problem).

*Wondering if my iPad3 will be able to "see" that hard drive.  Certainly not… or?  But the eMac and my PowerBook G4 (12" – Feb 2005, wireless) should be able to see the external hard drive, correct?

Thanks for any and all comments.

Best regards,

OK after a bit of trial and error – replying to my own question although welcome additional feedback / corrections:

    1. When both the ethernet cable AND Wireless (WiFi) are connected, and I open Airport Utility - when I choose the "other Airport base stations" drop-down menu at the top left of the main screen I see a choice of ethernet or wireless.  All I have to do if I want to keep this Airport Utility active while dropping (unplugging) my ethernet cable is to check "wireless" and then unplug the ethernet cable.  AND I was having some problems when both were connected simultaneously so glad that is resolved.
    2. The Belkin 7x powered USB hub is working great for both USB printing from all my computers (need to confirm the PBG4 wireless but believe that is fine also) - and also having the LaCie external HD visible on my MacBook Pro-13" in the shared section of the sidebar; as well as on the eMac.
    3. No, the iPad3 does not "see" the shared Hard Drive – but it does sync to the MBP better than ever now!

OTHER: I'll post separately but I realize that my Feb 2005 eMac (CRT-17") workhorse drops the internet (cable ethernet) very often- can run fine for 2 hours then drops the connection 3 times in 15 minutes.  IS IT POSSIBLE to repair this or get a new "ethernet" card without spending a small fortune (i.e. for less than $200 and hopefully a lot less…)??

    Thanks and regards,

eMacs can be upgraded to run an AirPort card but the Ethernet can't be fixed (apart from running over USB). The iPad can be made to see the drive via an app like FileBrowser (app store).

    Thanks for the informative reply!

    1. eMacs can't have ethernet card fixed: Is this because the ethernet is kinda hard-wired to the motherboard or something like that? (I was hoping I could just have the ethernet card replaced).
    2. How would I get a setup to run via USB?  Is this an external adapter which goes into a USB port on the eMac and plugs into the J45 (is that the number?) internet plug / cable?
    3. I will take a look at "FileBrowser" for my iPad--

    Again- really appreciate this!!

    You're welcome.

Yes, AFAIK the eMacs (like the iMac G3) has the Ethernet card as part of the logic board. A setup to run via USB would work, as you said, by plugging into a USB port on the eMac and converting this to Ethernet, thus giving you another Ethernet port. Look for one that is designed for Macs, there are quite a few as the MBA lacks an Ethernet port.

    OK great info!

I found 2 possible ethernet to USB adapters:

    1. By "Plugable":  USB 2.0 to ethernet LAN wired network adapter - seems this will work, but I'll contact Plugable.

    2. Apple USB Ethernet Adapter

Easily connect your MacBook Air computer to an Ethernet network with the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter. Small and light, it connects to the USB 2.0 port of your MacBook Air and provides an RJ-45 connector that supports 10/100BASE-T performance.  BUT NOT SURE IF THIS WILL WORK ON ANYTHING BUT a MacBook Air…

    One person commented:

This little gem used to be the device of choice for adding a second Ethernet interface to a Mac Mini Server and I'd been using one that way for about a year. After doing a software update to 10.6.6 it stopped working. Forewarned is forearmed – it appears that Apple is finally enforcing the MacBook Air system requirement.

    Thanks for any additional comments.

The 10.6.6 update of course doesn't affect your PowerPC eMac.

The Plugable one is probably cheaper and might work the same way.

About your Apple LaserWriter 12/640PS you can telnet in to change settings if you wish. These old workhorse printers still work well on modern networks. If you have your SE connected I think you may be able to change settings on the LaserWriter on that.

Thanks and NO I can't get the LW 12/640PS to connect - had this problem in mid-2011 when I changed ISP and they changed the IP numbers - even with my G4-733 running on Mac OS 9.2.2 I still could not change things- seems the LW was "frozen" in a set IP number--- here's the full post which I have just re-printed to read later this week and try again.

Possibly there is another way to connect the LW 12/640 if not via ethernet??  Even if I could get just my one computer to connect-- I have 2 $100 cartridges left and I get about 5000 or more sheets per cartridge - it prints a test page fine-- today was page 78,077 with this workhorse as you said!

With your LaserWriter what you might need to do is reset to factory settings then use your G4 to set it up. It seems like you've changed your IP address range. Then, use the LaserWriter Utility (I think that's what it's called, my memory's hazy) to set it up to be the IP you want it to be. Now, you should be able to telnet in and print.

With regards to the SE is it connected just out of interest?

Finally with regards to the Ethernet USB thing post back which one you used and if it works out of the box (I need to add Ethernet to a few Macs).

    OK great comments---

    • The IP address range did change and I know from 2011 I tried to change it via 9.2.2 using "Print Utility" but no luck -- and could NOT reset it to factory conditions - but I will set aside some time likely next weekend and try to reset it.  Any ideas on just how to do that short of taking a soldering iron to it appreciated!
    • When you say "telnet in"-- not sure what that is-- do you mean go via the Apple Extreme?
    • I was thinking maybe an ethernet to serial adapter or something might also work even if not networked.  I'd be using it 95% of the time myself anyway.
    • I shall definitely post back on the success or lack thereof with the Plugable (or Apple) USB to Ethernet adapter.  Not sure how available that will be here in the Belgian countryside but I'll work on it.
    • My Mac SE 4/40 (those are mb not gb  --): Until last Christmas I fired-it up each Noël with Mac OS 6.0.4 and wrote a letter, transferred it to a 3.5" disk, then put that into my USB Disk reader on my latest Mac and voilà worked great!  BUT last Christmas the screen finally died-- just a long vertical white line now.  I wonder if anyone could fix it or if I could replace the screen without paying a lot?  Still have the original Mac, case, mouse and keyboard--- be nice to resurrect it!

Telnet is a UNIX utility used to remotely access a variety of different computers and devices. Telnet can be accessed through the Terminal:

    $ telnet <ip-address-of-printer>

Then it'll be like you're on the Terminal, but for your LaserWriter (command line).

Print Utility, that's it. Try http://www.whoopis.com/howtos/laserwriter16-600/ or http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25512?viewlocale=en_US. You will want to make sure the 'comms' switch is in the off position I think.

Your SE can be attached to an Ethernet connection over SCSI but the adapters are hard to find. For the repair look here http://www.biwa.ne.jp/~shamada/fullmac/repairEng.html#VerticalLine.

Ethernet to serial might work, or you could use a print server.

You say: "or you can use a print server". I'm not sure how that would work or guess not sure really what you mean by a print server.

Really appreciate all your comments, information and links. I will be getting back here but currently going to jump on a mountain bike and do some nighttime biking.

Via my iPad3 – 575 apps and climbing!

(And I've deleted another 200 or so but amazing how many I use each week).

Just an ordinary print server (about £20 here in the UK). Made by Netgear, Linksys, D-Link etc.

Just updating here as I have had no time to advance with the eMac nor the setup of the Apple LaserWriter 12/640 PS printer – but hope to be able to do that about 12-13 Jan 2013 -

More then and I am starting a new post on my Apple Extreme setup as I think I may have issues there.
