Q: iMessage not working on mac

It started yesterday that I cannot send messages out through iMessage on my Macbook pro. It always says the receiver ID is not registered, but I can send iMessages to the same ID through my iphone or ipad.

 

Does anyone know what is going on with my iMessage? Thank you very much!

    Hi Andrew,

     

    Only the Original Poster (Blue Posts)  can award Helpful 1helpful.png or Correct 2correct.png Points to someone that makes a reply in a thread.

     

    They see boxes for each along with the reply that then can click.

     

    They can Award two Helpfuls and one Correct (if they so wish) to a max of three replies in the thread.

     

    Anything else is virtual.

    I am having the exact same problem with my mac..ever since I updated to Lion I have had this problem...How did you fix this? I have contacted Apple, and they haven't done anything about it since last week. Any suggestions?

    Hi,

     

    csy626 says it was his/her modem that was the issue.

    They did not explain how exactly other than it involved an IP change.

    This could be to the computer involved.

     

    It possibly involved the IP address that open port settings were pointing to were no longer the IP of the computer involved.

    I am having the same problem. I have followed your instructions and have not been able to get it active. It will activate from time to time and I can send and recieve messages then. But usually, it asks me for my password and then says, "Could not sign in to iMessage. The server encountered an error processing registration. Please Try again later.

     

    What has change?

     

    Updated Mountain Lion recently, that is when this first started to show.

    I restored the computer to a previous back up.
    My developer Id probably has expired by now.

     

    My id and profile are fine in apple and the id and pw combination work fine.

     

    When I first set this up, my mac, ipad and iphone were having problems. Apple told me to assign a different id to each.

     

    iphone, mac book pro and ipad all are registered under the same apple id. Needed for the developer license.

     

    The iphone uses my phone number. (supposedly)

    The mac is the apple id that main apple id.

    The ipad is registered under the same apple id though the imessage and facetime have thier own seperate ID for the ipad.

     

    I have always had one problem or another using iMessage. The goal is to not have all my devices go off when someone contacts me. I hope I can have this thing where they can contact a specific device and this can work. If not how can I have one id and not have all devices go off like a Christmass tree?

     

    PS It does not allow me to delete the iMessage (inactive) account. Also when I press the plus to add an account iMessage does not come up as a choice, only AIM, Jabber, Google Talk and Yahoo are available, so I can't even try to put in another id.

     

    FaceTime with the same ID on the mac works fine.

    Hi Richard,

     

    I have also posted in the other thread about the Time issue (Select the Automatic Setting).

    If you have one iMessage account and it is named then use the Sign Out button to remove the APple ID

    You can then add another.

     

    If you Messages > Preferences > Accounts lists an iMessages account that has not real name and is not logged in and as you can't use the minus key with iMessages accounts  (Don't ask me why they made it that different) you cannot remove it from the Preferences.

    It is normally marked as Inactive if this happens.

     

    You have to go to ~/Library/Preferences

    In the Finder  > Go Menu > Go to Folder and paste that path above  in the dialogue box that appears.

    IN the Preferences  find com.apple.imessage.bag.plist and com.apple.imservice.iMessages.plist and drag both to the Trash.

    Restart The Messages app.

    It is likely you will have to re-enter the Apple ID.

    The only way I have achieved this with two iPhones is to change the Apple ID used on one of them.

     

    Initially I set up Messages on the Mac first and then one iPhone.

    this create the pop up Messages on the Mac that the "iPhone Is Using it's phone  number and the Apple ID.

    Accepting adds the iPhone Number to the Receive Messages at and also in the Send Messages From drop down.

     

    I then added to Apple ID to the second iPhone.

    I denied the iPhone Number for this iPhone on the Mac and the other iPhone.

    This causes the number to not appear as a Receive and Send "Alias".

     

    Like you say if your iPhones are nearby your computer all three will chime as the sync will send it to the Apple ID not just the Number.

     

    I then removed the Apple ID from the second iPhone (It says it will remove it from All and implies "Forever" but I have not found it to be so)

    I added a second Apple ID but denied this and the iPhone Number at the Pop ups so that it was not linked to the Messages app on the Mac.

     

    I have yet to work out a way to keep at least one device from bleeping away between the iMac and the iPhone that do use the same Apple ID.

    This isn't exactly the most convienient way, but you could disable notifications on your devices. For example, if you get on the computer, you disable notifs on your phone. Then when you leave the house, you re-enable them on your phone and sleep your computer.

    I had this problem. I can corroborate that restarting the imagent process cured it.

    I can log into iMessage but I can't message anyone on my Macbook. It says the recipient is not registered with iMessage. This just started since upgrading to El Capitan.

    Hi,

     

    In Messages > Preferences > Account try Signing Out of the iMessages account.

    Then Quit the app.

    On restarting it add back the Apple ID.

     

    Does this help ?

     

    If you go to the Apple Icon Menu and select "About this Mac", does the panel that shows up display the Serial Number of the Mac ?

     

    At this point you may have to contact Apple Support.

    You need to explain you have an Apple ID issue logging in to the iMessages servers.

    The First Responders are Script led and are looking to solve Hardware or Software issues under Apple Care.

    Insist (politely) to speak to a Level 2 person and repeat it is a Logging in issue with an Apple ID to the iMessages server and not Hardware or Software (Apple IDs are free to fix).

     

    If the Serial number is missing then you need to get to an Apple Store and have it replaced.
