If you restored the phone AS NEW (without using a backup) and this problem continues, there is a hardware issue that needs evaluation by Apple or whoever provides iPhone warranty service in your area. If the phone was purchased only 1 day ago, take it back for exchage at the place of purchase.

I tried the restore as a new phone still no sucsess!
Front facing camera works after restore until you try and use the camera and then can not get the screen icon up to switch camera.
The camera was purchased from the Apple store in London but a month ago as it was a present.

Have you read the manual? And I don't mean the pathetic piece of paper they stick inside the box.
Download and install the iBook app thru the App Store. Then use it to visit the iBookStore and download the iPhone User Manual. The real thing, all 500 pages of it. Camera is in page 210.
