According to Roger Wilmut, "The iCloud Calendar and Time Machine don't play nice together."
Restoring iCloud calendars from Time Machine explains his method of solving the problem.
Manually backing up every day is another option.OS X Mountain Lion, iPad 3G, iPhone 4, 20GB iPod Color, iPod shuffle
Thanks for your reply,
I'm not actually using iCloud so I'm just interested in restoring calendars from the Time Machine. If I'm catching the drift of what's being said in Calendar help what I want is simply not possible and I must backup my calendar every now and then manually. I just find it hard to believe that Apple created this great backup system that doesn't work for their calendar program.

Since you are not using iCloud, you should be able to restore from a Calendar Time Machine backup.
The correct file to replace is the "Calendars" Folder. The "Calendars" folder is located in the Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library Folder.
Since that Library folder is normally hidden in Moutain Lion you open it by going to Finder, click on "Go," and depress the "option" key to reveal the "Library" folder that contains the "Calendars" folder.
Quit Calendar, make sure that the "Library" window is open, enter Time Machine and restore from the desired time line.OS X Mountain Lion, iPad 3G, iPhone 4, 20GB iPod Color, iPod shuffle
