I turned push off in the settings to save battery life, but after turning it back on, it does not work. I only get new emails when I open the mail app.

Am I missing something?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.2

    yes.

Push only works for exchange account.

Regular accounts download with frequency around 15 min if you set 15 min fetch.

you actually have to receive e-mail and then give 15 min and you will get it.

Don't forget to enable notifications if you want to be warned.

    once again.

    1. email has to get to server and be there for over 15 min.

    2. Notification enabled and set to alert.

    3. enabled in sounds.

    4. you have to be connected to internet for few min.

it might be worth trying a decent email app like altamail for better control of email accounts and notifications. personally i find the default Mail that comes with iOS too limited.

Push can still be on, does not affect anything but exchange. There is something else, but you r welcome.
