How do I completely wipe clean my system and reinstall my recently downloaded mountain lion?

MacBook Air (Late 2008), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

    See:

    http://osxdaily.com/2012/07/25/how-to-clean-install-os-x-mountain-lion/

However, I would ask why you want to do this. My experience is that most people do this very unnecessarily, to fix problems where a "clean reinstall" is overkill or won't fix.

I have extremely low memory space, think something got onto my comp that is constantly running or eating memory, air is running extremely slow, and really just want a solid clean start so I can clean up my entire computer.

I'm also trying to figure out how to reinstall my Microsoft office once Lion is reinstalled if you have any insight to that ad well.

Have you tried creating a fresh user account, or your Guest user and logging in to that to test?

Erase your system if you wish but as Mr. Reed mentions, consider fixing what's wrong rather than erasing and reinstalling everything. Doing so might fix the problem, but you will never know what caused it so you will learn nothing.

    Read:

OS X Mountain Lion: If your Mac runs slowly

The above is very cursory but be sure to carefully read and follow Repair a disk at the end.

Also consider the following, if you are interested. The choice is yours.

Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:

    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

The rainbow "wait cursor" will appear for a few seconds as it gathers its data.

Copy and paste its output in a reply. Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed".

Etrecheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.

When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

Erasing the hard drive and starting over from scratch won't help if, for example, you reinstall some junk software on the new system that was causing problems with the old system, or if you overload the hard drive with all the same files that were overloading the old system, or if you don't have enough RAM. If you're having performance issues, see:

    Mr. Gault,

I have attempted to post this w/o much luck.  So I hope I'm not breaking a posting commandment by pigtailing here.

My Mac Pro seems to be displaying more and more beachballs.  I ran the EtreCeck.  Do you see anything suspicious?

    Thanks,

    Cliff

Cliff you have so many system modifications it's surprising it runs at all.

Carbonite has a very slick marketing campaign but runs extremely poorly on a Mac. It is the most obvious process burdening your system. You are much better off using your own local backup strategy - Time Machine or "clone" software and dedicated backup disk drives that you can control. Time Machine is highly integrated in OS X, devastatingly easy to use, and its burden on your system will be negligible.

Next, you should get rid of Intego Virus Barrier. Intego is capable of doing nothing beneficial. TechTool Pro is also 100% useless. Monolingual can cause system corruption.

There are other potential culprits, some of which I am not familiar with.

It's your Mac; what you do with it is up to you, but when you modify a system to the extent that you have it is not reasonable to expect it to work as designed.

Get rid of the above and let your system work the way it is designed to work.

    Thank you.

I found the original post was my searching to see if best to do a clean install or simply un-intall all my many problems you mentioned.  From your review there seems like there could be others?  If I simply un-intall isn't there the possibility of "bits and bites" being left that continue to plague my system?

    Thanks again,

    Cliff

The decision to uninstall vs. erasing everything and starting over is not one I can make for you - in the case of Wrecks original question, he or she wanted to wipe the slate clean. If someone gave me your computer, I would be inclined to do the same, due to the presence of so many system modifications. However, since you installed those programs, you are better qualified to know what is installed and how to undo those installations.

The possibility of pieces being left behind once you uninstall a program exists. Well-written programs either have equally well-written uninstaller utilities that truly eradicate everything they installed, or they do not require an uninstaller. But well-written programs don't cause the sort of problems you describe in the first place.

Thank you I appreciate your help and concern for getting my system back to a "healthy" state.

Hi, I noticed you were able to decipher this stuff. I am having a problem with my computer where it keeps stopping - you can hear the hard drive going but it really slows down and I can't get much done. It's not backing up or anything as far as I can tell. So I am just about the reinstall the system as well but came across this thread. I ran the etreCheck program and it came up with some red items - photoshop and the finder and one of the system launch agents. Do you see anything here that I can do anything about?   I've tried looking at Activity Monitor while this is happening and it usually says 'kernel_task' at the top. This is a fairly new computer but my laptop is way faster at the moment.

    Thanks!
