Thanks for the kind words. A few post-mortem comments:
- You can't erase an active Time Machine backup volume.
- Once you've erased it, there's no reason to rebuild the Spotlight index.
- It's not clear whether you tried to back up in safe mode.
- The WD software probably caused the problem, and may cause it again.

Linc: I tried to back up in Safe Mode, but my computer couldn't find the external drive in Safe Mode. I've spent so much time on this issue that I think that if the WD drive causes problems again, my currency will be better spent on purchasing a new external drive. Which brand/model do you recommend?
