Welcome to the Apple Community.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this atwww.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

I'm also having this problem. My internet speed is about 7.8mbps, and I have 720p movies that never finish loading. Even my music is slow to play - I have to wait 10-15 seconds to buffer each song. Sometimes that doesn't even work! Any solutions you can think of would be greatly appreciated!

I don't believe that this is the answer. I am having the same problem but let me better expalin. I have a Apple TV 2 and 3. I have a windows 7 PC with iTunes on it and Home Sharing enabled and I have my own personal collection of Movies and videos that I stream to the Apple TV's, not via internet. It streams fine if I use an iPad to sttream using airplay but when I use my movie library using Home sharing it takes forever to laod a movie to play. The Apple TV 2 is connected directly via ethernet and the Apple TV 3 is using wifi, same issue. I tried both streaming directly from iTunes or from Applel TV menu same results.

No Winston, that is not the answer, because I've had the same internet speed since I bought the **** thing and now it stopped working.
I'm not even talking about HD movies, even SONGS take for ever to load, it is like I now have a $100 black plastic square beneath my tv that serves no purpose at all

Lot slots of discussion, but no help from Apple. Netflix, VUDU, Hulu plus and Amazon all send rented movies almost instantly. My apple tv won't takes forever to download, and says the play can occur when it cannot. The other providers have become my best choice, when I have an apple tv that is SUPPOSED to work. Can we please get an apple rep to tell us why their product works so poorly??
