It will continue fetching them, but it should not sound a notification if the phone is in standby.

Thanks for your quick reply. Is that really the case? I am sure I have heard an e mail come in, when DND was enabled. Maybe it wasn't in stand by at the time.
I just read the official apple instructions and it only seems to indicate that calls and messages are silenced.
I'm going to try again tonight. Thanks once again for your reply.

Everything will be silenced except for calls from people on the list you have specified as allowed, and the alarm clock. I believe that government emergency alerts may be allowed through if your carrier supports them, but that's a little unclear from the available documentation and I don't know anyone who has gotten one yet.

Thanks again. You are 100% correct. I have out my phone into DND mode and it didn't make a sound when I fetched some e mails. Sorry to have troubled you. Thanks for your input.
